A stunning day for my first hike with guests since lockdown.
Thanks Linde, Dimitry and Alice for joining me on the Uitkyk trail.
All seasons in one day including a rainbow, loads of King Protea buds, little pink Erica bells, feather heads, Cape Grassbirds and Ground Woodpeckers 😃 make for a fabulous hike.

South Africa may be home to big cities known to many around the world, but the heritage and culture of this melting pot of a country can be best seen in the many villages and small towns scattered in the valleys and plains of its vast countryside, known as the ‘karoo’. Dutch settlers, French ref...

❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️ For those that have hiked the Uitkyk Trail at Mont Rochelle with me in the past, it's full of snow today... We are surrounded by the white stuff ... So pretty. ❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️
Lots of snow in the reserve today. It even snowed at the entrance gate so there's sure to be snow cover higher up for the rest of the weekend.

A new hiking trail to try out at Mont Rochelle. Will be doing this one soon ! Pics to follow 😁☺️🥾
New trail at the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve
We are excited to announce that the reserve has a new trail: THE WINELANDS TRAIL. Starting at the MRNR car park and connecting with the LOWER CATS SE PAD TRAIL, this new trail is in full view of the Franschhoek valley at all times and is a lovely 3,5 km circular route with a spectacular view from start to finish.
If a 3,5 km hike is a bit short for you the Winelands Trail can also be walked as part of the Lower Cats se Pad trail. At its lower end the Winelands trail branches off the Lower Cats se Pad trail close to the Franschhoek Pass road, the upper end of the trail is close to the MRNR car park. It is about 1,8km long one way with a vertical reach of about 110 metres.
ROUTE OPTIONS
One way walk (as part of Cats se Pad): You will need to park your car at the top of Reservoir Street in Franschhoek and arrange for transport back to the village for this option (or you can start at the MRNR car park and walk down hill back to the village). Total one way distance from Reservoir Street entrance to MRNR car park is about 5.5 km. Vertical reach is about 400 m.
OR
Circular walk: Drive up Franschhoek Pass & park at MRNR car park. Best to do the walk in the direction as given below but the other way round is also fine.
Start the WINELANDS walk at the MRNR car park. At the junction with Cats se Pad Trail (this is near the Franschhoek Pass road) go up the wooden steps, cross the road, go up the steel ladder and continue on towards the Cats se Pad memorial monument. Follow the footpath and cross the pass road again to finish at the MRNR car park. Total distance about 3,5 km. Vertical reach about 110 m.
Franschhoek wine farms will soon be open and we can once again enjoy their spectacular wines, beautiful tatsting rooms and the fabulous mountain views we are famous for.
Book your 4 hour, 3 farm Mountain Bike ride for your next visit to the valley. We are ready to guide you through the vineyards. SPECIAL Post Lockdown price to celebrate - R700 pp including bike hire, all tasting costs and qualified guide. (valid until 30 Nov 2020).

Did you know this? How interesting.
We love mountain passes and although this lovely feature is not from Franschhoek, our pass is one of the best loved in the country and something you should experience when visiting our area. Give us a call and we'll take you there and do a spot of Geocaching or hiking while we're at it.
Did you know that “Hawequa” is actually Koisan for “The man in the Mountain”.
On occasion at Equinox in the late afternoon, this man can be seen in the mountain behind Wellington, on the way to Bain's Kloof Pass.

Living in such a wonderful part of the world, one cannot help but brag about it and want to share it with everyone! That’s what Franschhoek Adventures is all about... showing off our gorgeous town and the majestic mountains that surround it.
While we are world-renowned for our eatries and wine farms, there is so much more to do in and around the valley. Let me tempt you with just a few fabulous activities to choose from:
HIKING: Fantastic hikes in the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve which has 7 trails to choose from, many having spectacular views of the surrounding mountain range and the Franschhoek Valley. We also have trails at the Berg River Conservation Area as well as at the La Motte Wine Estate.
MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDES: Our very popular wine tours on mountain bikes take you to 3 or more vineyards for tastings and food pairings. We are surrounded by world-class vineyards offering a huge selection of award-winning wines and this is an excellent way to get your daily dose of exercise while enjoying the wines and the views the farms offer. Lunch is available at a number of farms if so desired. A Bespoke tour can also be arranged. We also offer a Village Ride which is a 15km circular route around Franshhoek if wine farms are not your thing. Good exercise, between beautiful farms with amazing mountain views.
HISTORY: Our Famous History Village Walk is an excellent way to get to know the town and its history. We walk around the side streets and view the old buildings, school, farms and churches and hear the stories of the people who lived there. You’ll learn about the first inhabitants of the area, the wildlife they shared the valley with as well as why we do not speak French in our very French town. The walking tour takes 2 hours but this tour is now also available as a 1.5 hour TUK TUK tour!
TOWNSHIP TOUR: Our local township Groendal, which incorporates the RDP area of Mooiwater and the informal settlement of Langrug, is a fascinating place to visit. Also steeped in history, you will see a side of South Africa which you may have missed so far. Our country is extremely divers and multi-faceted which gives us our uniqueness. Come and explore with us. Visit a restaurant, a shabeen, a creche, a local spaza shop and taste the local beer and food. If you’re lucky you may even get to hear the local music scene.
