Sunset over Gansbaai Harbour🌅

“Gansbaai is one of only a very few working fishing villages left in the Western Cape. The fishing industry dates back to the earliest settlement days in Gansbaai when Johannes Wessels erected the first temporary dwelling in 1881 next to the fresh water fountain on the spot where the old harbour is now. It was named Gansgat (goose hole) after the colonies of Egyptian geese that congregated around the fountain. The name was later changed to the more respectable Gansbaai (Goose Bay). Other nomad fishermen soon followed suit and laid the groundwork for a thriving fishing industry that even today is the biggest employment-generator in Gansbaai.” Credit:

📍Gansbaai, Overberg

The unpretentious village of Gansbaai - named after a flock of wild Egyptian geese that are alleged to have congregated at the freshwater fountain next to the harbour - has a large reputation.

Both Southern Right Whales and Great White Sharks frequent the Atlantic waters of the Danger Point Peninsula and are a major draw card for the town. Situated between the towns of Hermanus and Pearly Beach, Gansbaai lies in Walker Bay at the foot of the Dynefontein Mountains with a magnificent coastline rich in fynbos vegetation.

Dyer Island, just off Gansbaai, is the breeding ground of the african penguin, cormorants and other sea birds and a second island in the vicinity of the village is Geyser Island, home to some 60 000 Cape fur seals. It is the passage between these islands that, for obvious reasons, attracts the Great White and has become known as ‘shark alley’.

The waters around these islands have become a feeding ground for the endangered species, which has fuelled the rise of shark cage diving from Kleinbaai’s harbour. Fortunately, the area around Dyer Island has been declared a nature reserve and only boats with permits granted by the Department of Nature Conservation may enter the vicinity.

The entire Walker Bay area, between Gansbaai and Hermanus, is a whale sanctuary and the gentle giants of the southern ocean, the Southern Right Whale, can be sighted within metres of the shoreline where they come annually to mate and calve. These remarkable beasts spend summer feeding around Antarctica and then migrate thousands of miles to our waters, where sheltered bays, such as Gansbaai and nearby De Kelders, offer perfect refuge.

Klipgat Cave is located close to the seaside village of De Kelders and it is accessed via the Walker Bay Nature Reserve, managed by Cape Nature. Here visitors will be welcomed by dramatic ocean views. Klipgat Cave was occupied during the Middle and Later Stone Age from about 80 000 years ago to about 50 000 years ago and then again from 2 000 to 1 200 years ago. Amongst some of the main findings in the cave, archaeologists uncovered some of the earliest human remains of Homo sapiens. The bones of early fat-tailed sheep and pottery discovered here show that Khoe pastoralists lived in the area from about 2 000 years ago, one of the oldest dates in the Western Cape.

Detailed information boards at the site will lead the visitors through the daily lives of our ancestors from the Middle Stone Age through the Later Stone Age.

📍De Kelders, Gansbaai

De Kelders lies on the shores of Walker Bay - renowned as the home of the Southern Right Whale - because it is predominantly to these sheltered bays and rocky inlets that the whales return year after year to mate and calve between July through November. Some of the best land-based whale watching in the world is the major attraction of De Kelders and whales come to within metres of the rocks that line the edges of kelp beds along the De Kelders coastline, never ceasing to elicit delight.

The coast here has one of the most unusual and distinctive geological features in the form of a series of underground caves beneath the cliffs. Known formerly as Die Drup Kelder (the drip cellar) the town is today simply called De Kelders (Dutch for the cellars). These natural caves - there are a number of them, both large and small - contain stalactites and stalagmites and crystal clear pools set in the floor with cool water perfect for swimming. One in particular, known as the Freshwater cave, is famous for its pool, but not open to the public in a bid to conserve its original beauty. Stanford’s Bay in De Kelders is an ideal alternative for swimming.

The Klipgat cave, accessible via the De Kelders gate at Walker Bay Nature Reserve, was home to Middle Stone Age and Late Stone Age humans, and is one of the most remarkable examples of early human dwellings in South Africa.

Accessible via a boardwalk, and a small amount of rock-hopping, the Klipgat Cave has two chambers. The first has a rocky floor that leads to the sea.

To the left of this chamber is a small entryway that leads into the main site of the cave. Featuring a circular boardwalk that takes you on a journey through the historical significance of Klipgat Cave, the site is a reminder of our tremendously rich natural heritage in the Western Cape.

There are also spectacular views of the Walker Bay coastline stretching down to Hermanus in the distance.
