Our beloved African Penguin has now been officially listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. This status highlights the urgency of protecting these iconic birds along South Africa’s coasts. 🐧

What’s Driving the Decline?
🐟 Overfishing: African penguins rely on sardines and anchovies, but commercial fishing has depleted their main food sources, leaving them malnourished.
🌊 Climate Change: Changing ocean temperatures affect fish distribution, pushing food sources farther from penguin colonies.
🌍 Habitat Loss & Pollution: Coastal development and pollution threaten nesting sites, while oil spills pose a constant danger.

How YOU Can Help?
🌱 Choose Sustainable Seafood – Opt for eco-certified seafood to reduce overfishing and protect the penguins' food supply.
πŸ‘• Support Local Conservation Efforts – Many organizations work tirelessly to protect penguin habitats. Donations or merchandise purchases can make a real difference.
πŸ“£ Raise Awareness – Share posts, educate friends, and help spread the word about African Penguins’ plight.

By acting together, we can give these charismatic creatures a fighting chance.

Breaking Discovery! 🚨 Meet Sphyrna alleni - the Shovelbill Shark, a newly identified hammerhead shark species! 🦈 This stunning discovery from the Caribbean and Southwest Atlantic has a distinctive shovel-shaped head. It is named after the late Microsoft co-founder, Paul G. Allen, for his great support of marine conservation through philanthropic efforts. 🌍

Though freshly recognized, Sphyrna alleni is already facing threats and is likely more endangered than its close relative, the bonnethead shark. Despite not having an official IUCN classification yet, overfishing and habitat loss are rapidly endangering this species. πŸ’”

In the image, a young shovelbill shark is tagged and released so that scientists can get a better understanding of this species and its movements 😎

This exciting find underscores the urgent need for heightened marine conservation efforts to protect these creatures before it's too late. Let’s work together to safeguard our oceans and their incredible inhabitants! 🌊

Welcome to Gansbaai! This is a particularly special spot by the name of Die Plaat. The name is directly translated from Afrikaans as "the sheet", and relates to the long coastal plain that drops considerably just offshore. 🌊

We are so lucky to be able to call this beautiful place our home! 😍🌊

Is this not just the most smiley little shark you have ever seen? 😍

Sevengill cow sharks belong to the order Hexanchiformes. They are related to sharks that lived in the Jurassic Period about 300 million years ago! 😱

Sevengill sharks are ovoviviparous, which means that they nourish their young through yolk sacs inside the uterus, and then give birth to live young. They can have between 80 and 90 pups at one time, each measuring 40-50cm! Females are pregnant for around 1 year, and then take a year off from reproducing 😴

Happy World Sawfish Day! πŸ₯³πŸŒŠ

But what is a sawfish and how is it different from a sawshark? 🦈

A sawfish is a shark-like ray. We challenge you to find 2 differences between these species that can be seen in the images. Bonus points for any other differences you may know! 😎 Let's educate each other in the comments section! πŸ€“

There are five species of sawfish that are all categorized as Critically Endangered on the IUCN red list. Their populations have declined by over 90% due to overexploitation and habitat loss. The IUCN SSC considers sawfishes as one of the most threatened family of marine fishes in the world! πŸ’”

13/10/2024

Ahead of Penguin Awareness Day on the 12th of October, the confirmed number of breeding pairs of the African Penguin population dropped below 10 000 for the first time ever. This means that they at greater risk of extinction than ever before, with experts estimating that this species will be Functionally Extinct by 2035. This means that it would not be possible for them to repopulate to the point where they can play their role in the ecosystem. πŸ’”πŸ§

Would you like your children, or your grandchildren to experience the joy of seeing the quirkiness of the African Penguin? Then it is time to make some changes:
1️⃣ Advocate for more Marine Protected Areas and No-Take Zones
2️⃣ Join the fight against illegal fishing and overfishing practices
3️⃣ Cut down on your seafood intake
4️⃣ ONLY make sustainable seafood choices
5️⃣ Educate yourself and others by watching documentaries such as Penguin Town on Netflix. β€ΌοΈπŸŒ

Have you ever seen a white southern right whale calf?? These calves are referred to as being "brindle", and only about 4% of calves are born like this. 😱 Interestingly, about 94% of brindle calves are male! So it is safe to say that this one spotted in Gansbaai is a little boy. πŸ‹πŸ‘Ά

Today is International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste! Working in this industry can often result in leftover food and scraps. Which is why we do not throw any food away! Our scraps get used as compost or given to farm animals instead 😎 But next time you are at a restaurant or buffet, take a takeaway container with you or simply don't dish up as much food if you know you can't finish it! 😊

Did you know that what we use on the boat is also a waste product? All the nice fleshy parts of the salmon fish go to the restaurant industry, and we get the leftover bones, skin, and fins to use on the boat. This way, the entire fish is used and none is wasted! πŸ₯³

Disclaimer: we do NOT feed the sharks. These waste pieces of fish get mashed up with seawater and the oil is scooped back into the water to create an oil slick that the sharks can sense from where they are. Since this is a waste product with no big pieces of meat on it, the sharks do NOT become reliant on us, and they will still go out and feed in the ecosystem like they should! 🦈🌊

South Africa’s fynbos biome is one of the world’s most extraordinary ecosystems, famous for its incredible biodiversity and unique plant species. It is part of the Cape Floristic Region, and recently took the spotlight when South Africa’s exhibit at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show in London won three awards, including a gold medal. 🀩πŸ₯³

By taking care of our fynbos, we take care of our coastal environment! 🌊✨

Earlier this month we celebrated World Amazon Rainforest Day! 🌿 Rainforests like the Amazon are vital to life on Earth. They provide habitats for countless species, including endangered animals, and play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity. Rainforests also act as powerful carbon sinks, absorbing CO2 and helping to fight climate change. πŸ”₯🌍 The Amazon rainforest has faced record breaking wildfires this year, with a massive amount of biodiversity lost. πŸ’”

But did you know our oceans are also major carbon sinks? Oceans absorb about 30% of the carbon dioxide we produce, helping to regulate the climate and protect the planet. Both rainforests and oceans are essential in our fight against global warming.
Protecting these natural wonders ensures a healthier future for us and for wildlife.🌊✨

Happy World Environmental Health Day 🌍🌱

Our health is deeply connected to the health of the environment. Pollution, deforestation, and climate change threaten not only ecosystems but also the air we breathe and the water we drink. By taking action to improve environmental health, we protect both nature and ourselves.

From reducing plastic use to supporting clean energy, every effort counts. Healthy oceans, forests, and rivers mean healthier lives for all of us.

The ocean provides us with so much - from regulating the climate to producing the oxygen we breathe. One of its incredible gifts is seaweed, a nutritious food source. Unlike overfishing, foraging for your own seaweed is much more sustainable (if harvested correctly - see last image). Seaweed is also considered a superfood: It's the best dietary source of iodine, which helps support your thyroid gland. It also contains other vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin K, B vitamins, zinc, and iron, along with antioxidants that help protect your cells from damage. 😎🌱

Look up some fun recipes! By choosing sustainable ocean resources like seaweed, we can enjoy the ocean’s benefits while protecting its future. 🌊

One small drop for man, one giant wave for the ocean. Let’s make sustainable choices! πŸŒπŸ’§
