Happy World Ozone Day! 🌊🌍

The ozone layer acts as Earth’s natural sunscreen, shielding us from harmful UV radiation. Thanks to global efforts, the ozone layer is healing—but the fight isn’t over. Protecting the ozone also means protecting our oceans. Increased UV levels can harm marine ecosystems, from plankton to coral reefs. 😢

By reducing pollutants like CFCs and supporting eco-friendly alternatives, we’re helping both the skies and the seas. 🌈

One small drop for man, one giant wave for the ocean. Let’s continue making waves for a healthier planet, above and below! 🌞🌊

There is nothing quite like a walk on the beach and a swim in the lagoon. 🥳 We took along our trusty Two Oceans identification guide and turned this afternoon stroll into an educational one! It's that easy. There are also many free apps that you can download to identify species wherever you are. Check out the "Seek" app by iNaturalist.org for a start. 🌊🌿

The more we can learn about our marine environment, the more we are able to connect to it, and the more willing we will be to protect it! 🌍

Yesterday we celebrated ! 🥳🐬🌊

Dolphins are not just playful and intelligent creatures - they play a vital role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems! But today they face many horrific threats like bycatch, pollution, habitat destruction, and noise disturbances from ships and underwater drilling. 😢

You can help the dolphins by reducing plastic waste and participating in regular beach cleanups, consuming only sustainable seafood, supporting efforts to minimize underwater noise pollution, and boycotting the captive dolphin industry! 🌊🐬

Remember, together we can make one giant wave for the ocean! 🌊😎

Last week our volunteers had the opportunity to visit Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary for an enrichment visit. They made some great toys for the big cats to play with! These toys are thrown into the animal enclosures, and the cats love it! 🥳😍

Our volunteers are doing their bit for the ocean by cleaning up around the Kleinbaai harbour! 🥳🦈

Here are 5 benefits of cleaning up your local beach:
1. It protects marine life by removing trash that can harm them. 🐧
2. It benefits the local community because people are more likely to spend time and money in and around beautiful beaches (not ones covered with trash!). 🏖️
3. It creates a safer environment for humans too, by removing dangerous pieces of trash like metal and glass. 🤕
4. It makes seafood safer to eat by minimising the amount of microplastics that end up in fish! 🐟
5. It gets you outside and in the sun, away from the screens! ☀️

So get out there and make a difference in your local community by doing a beach cleanup! 🚮🌊

Did you know that recent studies have confirmed the presence of toxic levels of co***ne in 13 sharpnose sharks off the coast of Rio de Janeiro! 😰

Many of you might start getting flashbacks to the infamous movie "co***ne sharks" but the scariest part of this discovery is the effect that it will have on these sharks and the ecosystems they inhabit. 😢 Five of the sharks that tested positive were pregnant at the time. The effects that these kinds of drugs have on animals are unclear but thought to be similar to the effects seen in humans.👶🦈

The co***ne is thought to have been introduced into the ecosystem via runoff from illegal labs as well as through human excrement.🌊🚽

This is yet another example of how our actions affect the world around us. The time for change is now!🌍

In South Africa we are incredibly lucky to have a total of 41 Marine Protected Areas along our coastline. BUT if you look at this image, can you imagine that all of those numbers only comprise 5% of South Africa's oceans? 😱

MPAs are described by the IUCN as "A clearly defined geographical space, recognised, dedicated, and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long-term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values”. By protecting our ocean, MPAs ensure that the ocean can keep providing us with ecosystem services such as buffering the harsh effects of climate change. 🌍🔥

This means that MPAs are just as important for humans as they are for nature.
Join the fight to protect more of South Africa's coastline by following Marine Protected Areas SA and Youth4MPAs, and becoming an ocean advocate! 😎

We spent the day with our youth club, the Ocean Defenders, yesterday! 🥳Unfortunately, our trip to the Danger Point lighthouse was cancelled due to the weather... 🌧 So we spent the morning making some lovely bracelets for our Recycle Swop Shop! The children in the local community will be able to swop their recycling points for some beautiful jewelry, made with love! 😍

Thank you to M+S Designs for donating the lovely beads that our Ocean Defenders could use! 🤩 Gansbaai Tourism we will see you at the Danger Point lighthouse next time, when the weather has improved! 😉

Look at this subantarctic skua catching a free ride back to the Kleinbaai Harbour after an exhausting day out at sea! 😉😂

They are also known as the brown skua, antactic skua, or Falklands skua. 🦅 A study conducted in 2016 showed that they are intelligent enough to recognize different individual humans! 😱

This weekend, the 91st Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo was held in Duaphin Island, Alabama, USA.

Same as last year, Bull Sharks and Tiger Sharks have been slaughtered for 3 days in the name of sports and entertainment…

Local sports fishermen spent the weekend competing to come back with the biggest shark possible in order to win the competition.

All these sharks are being killed in the name of entertainment, killed for the competition. None of them are being eaten or supporting the livelihood of anyone…

After being killed and weighed, they are simply thrown away as a regular piece of garbage…

Last year, some “local scientist” were there and apparently “using the sharks for science” giving fishermen the perfect excuse to kill them…

Thanks to the images we captured last year and the social media campaign we led gathering millions of views, they retracted from attending the event this year !

Therefore, there’s now literally 0 excuses for this slaughter !

These endangered sharks are being slaughtered by a small community of highly privileged people that destroy and waste priceless marine animals jeopardizing ocean ecosystems for nothing but fun !!!

This event is completely legal, allowed by and sponsored by huge companies such as joebullardchevrolet, , and !

The authorities and companies allowing and supporting the unnecessary slaughter of such fragile species in the name of “sports” and “entertainment” must be held accountable !
