The Republic of the Congo is one of Africa’s last great frontiers—an untouched paradise of dense rainforests, meandering rivers, and extraordinary wildlife. As African Born Safaris, we take you deep into the heart of this remote and breathtaking landscape, offering an immersive experience that few travelers ever get to witness.

Why the Republic of the Congo?

While most safari-goers think of the savannahs of East and Southern Africa, the Congo Basin offers an entirely different adventure. Here, you’ll trade open plains for towering mahogany trees, golden grasslands for lush swamps, and the roar of lions for gorillas. It’s a place where nature reigns supreme—wild, unfiltered, and humbling.

What to Expect on a Safari in the Congo

☁️ Odzala-Kokoua National Park – One of Africa’s oldest national parks, this is the crown jewel of Congo’s wilderness. Trek through ancient rainforests to observe the elusive Western Lowland Gorillas in their natural habitat. Experience the magic of bais—natural forest clearings where forest elephants, buffalo, and antelope gather to drink.

🦍 Gorilla Trekking – Unlike anywhere else in Africa, the Republic of the Congo offers intimate encounters with gorilla families. The experience of locking eyes with a gorilla in the wild is nothing short of life-changing.

🚤 River Safaris on the Lekoli & Mambili Rivers – Glide silently through jungle waterways, spotting forest elephants, crocodiles, and colorful birdlife. The Congo’s labyrinth of rivers provides some of the most serene and untouched landscapes on the continent.

🌿 Night Walks & Rare Wildlife Encounters – As the sun sets, the jungle awakens with nocturnal creatures, from tree pangolins and galagos to owls and leopard cats. The Congo is a biodiversity hotspot, with species found nowhere else on Earth.

🔥 Luxury Bush Camps in the Heart of the Rainforest – African Born Safaris partners with exclusive eco-lodges that blend seamlessly into the jungle. Expect exceptional service, chef-prepared meals, and total immersion in nature, with nothing but the sounds of the forest as your backdrop.

Let’s plan your next wild expedition.

Abu camp is named after Abu the elephant who first appeared in a Clint Eastwood’s 1990 film. At the start of Abu camp, Abu along with other elephants rescued from exploitative situations were brought to Botswana and Africa’s first elephant back safaris were pioneered in the Okavango Delta seventeen years ago. Elephant back safaris were stopped in December 2016 and the focus of the experience has moved to conservation and awareness of these magnificent giants. For the initial years’ guests were able to interact with the resident elephant herd, meeting each individual and journeying into the complex herd behaviour. Each pachyderm has a fascinating individual story and character. Some were rescued from captivity or as orphans. The herd’s offspring will never experience life in captivity; all Abu herd calves have been sired by wild males and the aim is to reintroduce them to independent life in the wild. The Abu herd is free to come and go as they wish at any time and at night, they voluntarily returning to the boma.

Always amazed to see what the is able to achieve. School nutrition facilitates a child’s ability to learn and supports their promise of reaching the full potential as adults.

We’re proud to be a part of something bigger than us!

Did you know that for every person that travels on safari with us, we will donate enough meals for a child to eat at school for a whole year? Since we started the initiative, we have fed over 1000 kids, and we cannot wait to do more.

A friendship that began as a fierce teenage rivalry! Callum and Sean attended opposing schools in Johannesburg and only met while playing water polo against each other (probably breaking each others’ noses at some point!). It wasn’t until much later that they met each other on neutral ground at Pafuri, both working as guides. They quickly understood that they had similar interests and passions and it did not take long for a life-long friendship to form. Ian joined the African Born Safaris team in early 2022 and has known both Callum and Sean for many years.

Ever dreamed of walking the Pafuri?

The Pafuri “triangle” is a wedge of land created by the confluence of the Limpopo and Luvuvhu at the tripoint Crook’s Corner, which forms a border with Zimbabwe along the Limpopo River. It is a natural choke point for wildlife crossing from North to South and back, and forms a distinct ecological region.

The Pafuri region is famous for its bird watching and more than 250 bird species have been recorded in a year. While comprising only about 1% of the Kruger National Park’s actual area, the area contains plants and animals representing almost 75% of the Parks total diversity

The area is famous for its elephant herds in winter, which come to drink from the Luvuvhu river.

When to Walk:
The walking trails only run from April-November, as this is when the bush is the least thick. Contact us to reserve your dates for 2025

What to see:
While game is plentiful, one is most likely to encounter Nyala, buffalo and Bushbuck in the riverine areas and drier adapted game, including white rhino, in the uplands. The area is famous for its elephant herds in winter, which come to drink from the Luvuvhu river.

Why we like it:
Pafuri is possibly our favourite place in Africa! It’s wild, beautiful and best explored on foot. It is also one of South Africa’s best birding spots. Daily flights from Johannesburg to Pafuri Airstrip are available.

Come walk with us... Pafuri is arguably the wildest place in South Africa and an incredible place to explore on foot with very few roads and so much wilderness.…

Travelling on safari in Tanzania with the Barker family was nothing short of spectacular.

Tanzania is a wildlife Eden. The fabled migration, along with the other seasonal wonder of the mass birthing of the wildebeest, should be on the ‘Bucket List’ of every wildlife enthusiast.
