Born on 18 January to Klimuit (mother) and Hans (father), this little bundle of joy is the first donkey born in Goedverwacht in 40 years. Klimuit got her name from her uncanny ability to escape from her pen – even at 10 months pregnant she would leap the fence if she felt she wanted to chomp on the veggie and flower beds that surround her paddock. Ha(aaa!)ns can make a big, big noise!
Her parents come from another little village in the Western Cape and ended up with us as they needed a new home. The community came together and in record time built them a home behind the Snoek en Patat Junction. The Junction is home to the community run tourism office where you can book various types of tours including an adventure tour past the baboon caves to view ancient rock art, cultural and historical tours as well as book a traditional home-stay in the village. Local art, craft and food also available.
We fondly refer to Hans and Klimuit as our “Ubers”. We are repairing a 2 seater donkey cart and have a four seater on the way, this will be a local taxi and delivery service. Milk, eggs, bacon, fruit - all from down the road - and bread from the Goedverwacht Watermill’s stone-ground flour (oldest working watermill in SA) delivered to your home-stay in the morning by donkey cart instead of car sounds great to us!
The gardens and paddock next to The Junction are situated in a century-old guava orchard which the donkeys absolutely love! We have a sneaky suspicion that Klimuit’s pregnancy craving was guavas as she pushed Hans out the way to get to them. We look forward to officially naming the newest member to The Junction family.
