Roser’s Remedies: A Legacy of Healing and Faith 🌿

On Wednesday, 13 June 1849, Genadendal welcomed a remarkable figure, Dr. Rudolph Roser, whose arrival shaped the town’s history in profound ways. Renowned for his expertise in medicine, flora, and homeopathy, his work earned him a Ph.D. from the University of Tübingen.

When devastating epidemics struck—measles in 1858 and typhoid in 1865—Dr. Roser’s compassionate care and innovative treatments saved countless lives. Amidst the typhoid outbreak, out of 250 patients, only 30 succumbed, including the missionary Heinrich. Dr. Roser’s unwavering faith guided his work, believing that God uses even suffering to fulfill His purpose.

“The thorns and thistles of this world have often first to be removed by the infliction of bodily suffering, before the good seed can come forth.” – Dr. Roser, 1856

Today, you can step into the past at the Genadendal Mission Museum. Recently, a hidden chest was uncovered in a dusty attic, revealing Dr. Roser’s original medicine bottles, carefully preserved from the mid-19th century. This discovery is now part of a fascinating exhibit, alongside one of the world’s oldest stethoscopes and other historic medical equipment.

📜 Step back to 1918! A night of musical marvel unfolded in the Genadendal Chapel to aid the Caledon Hospital. Among the highlights were the enchanting Queen of Angels and the powerful Ora pro nobis, bringing faith and melody together. This was more than a concert; it was a movement of hope.

Reflecting on Remembrance Day, Four Days Later

Four days ago, on Remembrance Day, the fields of Genadendal were quiet as we joined together to honor those who gave everything for a better world. Laurence Binyon's timeless words resonate still:

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them."

Even days later, the red poppies remind us of their sacrifice and resilience. Their memory lives on in our hearts, a call to cherish the peace they fought so bravely to secure.

Hoërskool Emil Weder presteer

"Die plaaslike hoërskool was tydens die 1999 Senior Sertifikaat-eksamen weer eens die trots van Genadendal. Die skool het in hierdie eksamen 'n slaagsyfer van 100% behaal. Met hierdie prestasie het Emil Weder die top skool van voorheen benadeelde skole in die Wes-Kaapprovinsie geword.

Wat die skool met die lang opvoedkundige tradisie, se prestasie merkwaardiger maak is dat 'n slaagsyfer van 96% en meer reeds vanaf graad 10 behaal word.

As erkenning vir uitnemende werk het die skool 'n skenking van R 100 000.00 van die WKOD ontvang. Met hierdie skenking gaan die skool se rekenaarsentrum tot een van die beste in die Wes-Kaap opgegradeer word. Leerders sal eerdaags (vanaf 1 Maart 2000) op die internet kan sweef en korrespondensie deur middel van e-pos kan doen. Hierdie uitbreiding sal Emilarians in staat stel om navorsing oor bykans enige voorwerp op die rekenaar te doen en behoort die skool na 'n nuwe era van akademiese uitnemendheid te lei.

Die inskrywing van die skool is huidig 656. Daar is nog enkele plekke in graad 9 beskikbaar.

Doen so voort, Emil Weder - Genadendal is trots op julle."
