One of the must-do adventures in Uniondale is a scenic drive up the hill to the Boere Fort. Back in the early days of the Boer War (1899-1902), Uniondale was guarded by five British forts, and four of them still proudly stand today. On January 21, 1901—just two days after war was declared—Commandant Gideon Scheepers led the first invasion, where two troop trains were derailed and two others were looted and set ablaze near Uniondale.
The most famous fort, perched right above the town, was lovingly restored by the author Daleen Mathee during her seven-year stay in Uniondale. It’s a piece of history with a view you won't want to miss!

At the beginning of the Boer War (1899-1902) Uniondale was defended by five British forts, four of which still stand today. During the first invasion by Commandant Gideon Scheepers on 21st January 1901, only two days after the declaration of war, two troop trains were derailed and two trains were looted and burnt near Uniondale. A third train was captured by the Boers but turned back before reaching them, who had been informed of its approach by a spy in Pretoria.

One way to explore this town, especially as it's a small town, is with Dirk in his bright yellow tuck tuck called Toekie.
A historically rich town with ghost stories, family fueds and pedlar trading which shaped the town as it is today. I hopped in for the ride and this is what I discovered:
1. Did you know that Uniondale was originally two bordering towns, Hopedale and Lyons, which become Uniondale in 1856 after an argument between the towns of where the Dutch Reformed church should be built. The church gave the owners of towns an ultimatum which resulted in the union of the two towns.
2. Let us know if you know the history of the Cork tree in town as seen in the video. Hint: it was brought to Uniondale by and English nurse.
3. Uniondale was part of the ostrich feather boom which was brought to Uniondale by the Lithuanian
Jewish pedlars. Many of them settled in the Klein Karoo and resulted in the building of the beautiful litle synagogues.
4. The old watermill is known to be the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. It was originally build in 1852 by James Steward for the milling wheat and it remained operational for 100 hundred years until it was damaged in a flood. In 1977 Dalene Mathee restored the watermill an was instrumental in claiming it as a
National Monument.
