Some Fun Facts about Helicopters this Friday
Helicopters have a fascinating history, from ancient toys to record-breaking achievements. Did you know that simple spinning toys made from bamboo, known as "bamboo-copters," were used in China as far back as 400 BC? These toys are considered early precursors to modern helicopters.
The term "helicopter" was coined in 1863 by French writer Ponton d’Amécourt. Derived from Greek words meaning "spiral" and "wing," it highlights the unique mechanics of vertical flight.
In 1907, Paul Cornu, a French engineer, created the first piloted helicopter. While it briefly lifted off the ground, it wasn’t stable enough for practical use.
Helicopter aviation has also seen some incredible milestones. In 1982, Dick Smith became the first person to fly solo around the world in a helicopter. Then, on May 14, 2005, Didier Delsalle achieved the extraordinary by landing a helicopter, the Eurocopter AS350 B3, on the summit of Mount Everest!
