⭐️A Tribute to Di Nosworthy⭐️
"Pioneering Tourism in Gordons Bay: A short story about Di Nosworthy’s 25-Year Journey"
My Story...
In the early 1990s, I moved to Gordons Bay, where I owned The Captains Tavern Restaurant (now Tallas Restaurant) on the beachfront. During this time, I noticed a rising demand for accommodation and tourism-related services. That’s when the idea hit me: Gordons Bay had incredible potential, and I was excited to explore it.
I launched Gordons Bay Tourist & Accommodation Centre. Our first office was in Uncle Charlies Ice Cream Parlour, next to Tallas and across from the busy Van Riebeeck Hotel. We aimed to be a one-stop shop for visitors, offering accommodation listings and organizing tours to local attractions, including the Winelands, Peninsula, and beyond. It was an exhilarating time, with activities like boat cruises, whale watching, shark cage diving, and more.
The Team Grows...
As business grew, we added Claire Myburgh as our bookkeeper. Claire was with me for 25 years, through all the highs and lows. Another essential team member was my African Grey parrot, Beluga, who came to work with me every day. She quickly became a beloved part of the office, chatting with guests (and occasionally demanding "slap chips" from restaurant patrons!).
Expanding Services...
The centre grew to offer more than just information and bookings. We sold souvenirs, branded clothing, and more. I became a local historian, providing visitors with details about Gordons Bay and its unique heritage.
A Fun Side Project...
In 2006, we decided to make our own Calendar Girl calendar. Twelve of us, including 89-year-old Helene Van Schalkwyk (author of *The Jewel of Gordons Bay*), posed for photos in scenic locations around the area. It was a fun and memorable way to promote the region.
Pre-Social Media Days...
In 1996, without social media, all reservations were handled by phone, fax, or in person. Managing the business was a 24/7 job, and I also looked after properties for overseas owners. It was a lot of responsibility, but I thrived on the challenge.
A Career Highlight...
One of my proudest achievements was bringing the Ironman competition to Gordons Bay in 2000. I spent months organizing accommodation and logistics. The race attracted 355 competitors, with fantastic global media coverage, helping to further establish Gordons Bay as a sports destination.
A Sad Chapter...
In 2005, we were devastated when the Van Riebeeck Hotel was demolished. Despite our efforts to save it, the landmark was lost, along with countless memories of celebrations and events.
A New Chapter...
In 2009, I relocated the office to my home studio as Gordons Bay grew from a small village into a thriving town. The business flourished, and I became a regular contributor to newspapers, radio, and TV, sharing my expertise on tourism.
The Social Media Shift...
As social media changed the tourism landscape, I realized it was time to step back. After 25 hands-on years, I passed the torch to Juanita Wilson, a dynamic leader who has taken Gordons Bay Tourism to new heights. I couldn’t be prouder of her and the incredible team that continues to build on the foundation we laid.

Gordon’s Bay is a sunny north-facing village enjoying the warmer waters of False Bay, nestled on the sea shore at the base of the Hottentots Holland Mountains. Gordon’s Bay has an authentic, relaxing South African atmosphere and so close to Cape Town yet away from the hustle and bustle of traffic and the Cape Town city. This ‘Gorgeous’ Gordon’s Bay is ideal for a family holiday, a romantic celebration, a solo getaway or central base for your business trip or golfing holiday.
Gordon’s Bay, Heart of the Cape!
Gordon’s Bay is centrally located close to Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Hermanus. Gordon’s Bay, also referred to as Heart of the Cape because there are at least 40 things to do within 40km! Exploring the Cape and you don’t like packing and unpacking every day to see another destination? Stay in one of the many Guesthouses, B&B’s, Boutique Hotels, Self Catering Suites or Apartments and explore all the famous places like Hermanus, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch, Cape Town, Muizenberg and Kalk Bay, from one place, all in a one hour drive. We have four routes starting from or finishing from Gordon’s Bay. The famous Whale route to Hermanus over Clarence Drive with spectacular views, 4 Passes route through the Wine and Fruit lands that surrounds us, The Wine route from Sir Lowry’s Pass, Somerset to Stellenbosch and Franschoek and of course the Bay route taking you along False Bay to quaint places like Muizenberg, Kalk-Bay up to Simon's Town and Cape Point!
Gordon’s Bay is also Heart of Cape Golf!
You play Golf and planned a stay in Gordon’s Bay? Gordon's Bay, with two 18 hole Championship Courses within a fifteen minute drive (no pun intended!), four more within 30 minutes, and a further seventeen more within one hour, can confidently lay claim to being the perfect base from which to explore and experience, the wide variety of terrain and settings, "off-course" experiences, friendly atmosphere and value for money that golf in the Western Cape provides.
Enjoy our spectacular sunsets!
Gordon’s Bay is famous for the spectacular sunsets! Watch as the sun slips behind the indigo-coloured Table Mountain Range across the Bay and the sky lights up. Tones of peach, apricot, gold maroon and violet swirl in amazing cloud patterns and shine on the Helderberg Mountains, which reflect pink hues onto the patchwork of vineyards in the Helderberg wine region.
White sandy beaches
Gordon’s Bay offers sunny, white sandy beaches lined with quaint seaside restaurants or shady milkwood trees. The gentle shallow water warmed by the sun is a delight for you to suntan and swim or for youngsters to safely play in rock pools. Bikini Beach, awarded Blue flag status for cleanliness and safety, is next to the picturesque Gordon’s Bay Harbour.
False Bay has warmer water compared with Atlantic Beaches in Cape Town!
Sea temperature in summer often reaches 22 °C (72 °F) in False Bay due to the South Easter wind blowing the warm Agulhas into False Bay. Whereas on the Atlantic beaches (in the City of Cape Town) the same wind pulls the warm surface water away from the coast, and this is replaced by very cold water from great depths, usually 6 - 14 °C (45 - 57 °F).
Our unique two harbours
Unique in South-Africa, Gordon’s Bay boasts two harbours. Our picturesque Gordon’s Bay Harbour and the Blue Flag-rated Harbour Island Marina where large cruisers and other sea craft are safely moored offering a delightful setting for seaside dining and sipping the excellent local wines.
It is not about things to do around Gordon’s Bay but how much time you have?
