This cheetah has escaped where it lives and has been darted with immobilizing veterinary drugs so it can be caught and taken back to its game reserve. This is to protect it from people outside the game reserve.

Our guests had the unexpected bonus of assisting with an African Wild Dog immobilization. They are the second most endangered predator in Africa, but need suitable large habitats for expansion.
And then on Saturday it all came to an end - our latest successful 2 week African Vet Safaris was over! Thank you to our guests for joining me and contributing to wildlife conservation in the process! I look forward to welcoming you back in Africa in future.

On Friday we set off in freezing weather conditions to dart and dehorn rhino. This is to help counter the ongoing poaching pandemic.
Poaching numbers are down and that’s largely due to almost every rhino owner dehorning their animals - including state run national parks - but also due to the much smaller remaining rhino population.
These rhino have previously been dehorned, but the horns grow at around 4-8 cm per year - very variable- and so need to be cut again every 2-3 years.
We successfully darted and dehorned 3 rhino, all funded by our guests - thank you!

On Thursday we immobilized an elephant bull to remove his non-functioning tracking collar. The bull would not respond to the chopper and was in a tricky area but went down in a thicket, crushing a tree in the process! He recovered well and once again our African Vet Safaris clients sponsor a necessary wildlife intervention through their participation.

After more wildlife viewing in a new conservation area we relocated to a different private game reserve. Game viewing has been excellent and we’ve also interacted with ecologists, anti-poaching staff and had veterinary conservation talks . Yesterday our guests sponsored the immobilization and collaring of a young male lion. Thank you! He and his siblings will soon disperse and their whereabouts need to known.

Next up, multiple game drives in different areas , a behind the scenes tour of a wildlife facility, a night game drive and some snorkeling! Sadly today the weather prevented our whale watching excursion…. But we moved to a new wildlife reserve further north.
Enjoy the images of some of our experiences to date.

So many busy days and so little time to share. On Sunday we visited some scenic points along the Panorama Route before learning about conservation from the Kruger to Canyons | Biosphere team. We visited a subsistence farming site and enjoyed lunch in the village. Then it was time to explore the canyon forest at the Gorge Lift Company.
Monday entailed a citrus farm visit at impressive Ambrosia Citrus Estate and a grassroots tannery, abattoir and aquaponics program. Big shout out to Angi Ellet for all the arrangements and supporting these amazing initiatives which alleviate poverty and give people a sense of purpose!
On Tuesday we headed into world famous Kruger National Park… more to follow.

On Thursday we visited the Agricultural Research Council of South Africa followed by a Pretoria city tour leaning more about SA and visiting some landmarks.
Next up a feedmill, feedlot (including a delicious South African lunch!) and a Boer goat stud.
Today we learnt more about aquaculture and the veterinary aspects.
THANK YOU to everyone for hosting us and your unreserved South African hospitality.
