LYDENBURG FALLS
The Lydenburg Falls remains one of the province’s most beautiful and impressive waterfalls. In addition, it is also one of the highest in the country. Situated on the Dorps River, this popular attraction consists of three individual falls. Two tumble, side by side, into a large basin with pools adjacent to it, while the third tumbles from that basin. The total height of the falls is an amazing 244 metres.

The waterfalls make for breath-taking sights and photo backdrops, while the pools are awesome for swimming – the ideal refresher after a walk. There is a small entrance fee to see the falls, but it does not compare to the reward of the ultimate in natural power.

KRUGER NATIONAL PARK
Where nearly 2 million hectares of unrivalled diversity of life forms fuses with historical and archaeological sights - this is real Africa.
The world-renowned Kruger National Park offers a wildlife experience that ranks with the best in Africa. Established in 1898 to protect the wildlife of the South African Lowveld, this national park is unrivalled in the diversity of its life forms and a world leader in advanced environmental management techniques and policies.

Truly the flagship of the South African National Parks, Kruger is home to an impressive number of species: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals. Man's interaction with the lowveld environment over many centuries - from bushman rock paintings to majestic archaeological sites like Masorini and Thulamela - is very evident in the Kruger National Park. These treasures represent the cultures, persons and events that played a role in the history of the Kruger National Park and are conserved along with the park's natural assets. Numerous visitors to the Kruger National Park (KNP) has called this park the focal point of South African National Parks. Being the biggest national park in South Africa, visitors can expect an abundance of wildlife sightings, various accommodation options (ranging from pristine lodges to "roughing it" in nature camp sites) and a pure African bushveld setting as the backdrop.

Visitors need not to worry about how to fill their free time - KNP offers an exciting assortment of activities, each one bent on bringing the guest closer to nature and making them feel at home.

Whether it is eco trails, back packing, day walks... participants can rest assured that experienced, professional and armed guides will act as trail leaders and interpret the stunning environment at regular intervals. This allows the participants to get close to nature and experience its wonders like never before.
PARK & RIDE
Hop in and ride - it's as simple as that! Guests at Kruger now have the opportunity to make use of the "Park and Ride Scheme" where you can get to see the Big 5 - currently only available in the Marula Region - Numbi, Phabeni and Kruger gates.
ENTRANCE FEES
South African Citizens and Residents (with ID) R110 per adult, per day
R55 per child, per day
DAY VISITORS
All the main rest camps have day visitor areas. There are also many picnic spots and other visitor get out points distributed throughout the park. At the picnic spots visitors can (for a nominal fee) hire gas skottels (outdoor elevated frying pans) to cook meals on. These pans are cleaned by the attending staff, thus meaning people don’t have to worry about carrying cumbersome and greasy pans in their vehicles.

There is a maximum threshold of vehicles that can enter the park daily. If this threshold is reached only visitors with pre-booked overnight accommodation will be permitted access.

DRIVE PANORAMA ROUTE - MPUMALANGA
One of the country's most scenic self-drives, the Panorama Route, explores the Mpumalanga highlands, or the north-eastern section of the Great Escarpment of the Drakensberg. In these rugged mountains the plateau comes to an abrupt and dramatic halt, falling steeply away into the Lowveld accompanied by incredible views out over the grasslands of Africa.

To describe the natural attractions with the written word is difficult, but people recount being able to 'touch the clouds' whilst others have called the route the 'most beautiful place in the world'.

The Panorama Route's popularity has much to do with its proximity to the Kruger National Park. It is often part and parcel of any organised trip to the game reserve. But it is also favoured for the access it provides to one of the province's major scenic draw cards, the Blyde River Canyon. The Blyde River Canyon is one of the largest canyons on earth, and increasingly popular with overseas visitors.

There are a number of nature reserves and game parks along and near to the Panorama Route. These include the world-famous Kruger Park as well as the Ohrigstad Dam Nature Reserve, Sabi Sands Game Reserve, Mount Sheba Nature Reserve and Gustav Klingbiel Nature Reserve.

The most popular stretch of the route is the R532 that winds its way from the town of Sabie via a selection of graceful waterfalls - the Sabie Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Mac Mac Falls - to God's Window, the Blyde River Canyon, Bourke's Luck Potholes and the three Rondawels.

The famous Lowveld View is not even 5 km north of Bourke's Luck Potholes. This view out over the canyon from a height of 1 219 metres above sea level, the Blyde River cutting its way through the valleys below and the Blydepoort Dam in the distance, is unspeakably beautiful.

To rush the drive would be to miss the enchantment.

There are other road routes that also form part of the Panorama Route that have equally beautiful highlights:

The R36 to Matibidi past the Lydenburg Falls, Ohrigstad Dam Nature Reserve and on to Echo Caves
The R37 along Long Tom Pass (arguably one of the most beautiful passes in the province)
The R533 between the historical mining village of Pilgrim's Rest and Graskop – both interesting to visit
Hazyview makes a good stop for lunch, or as a launch pad into the Kruger National Park, and Graskop makes a good base if you plan to drive the Panorama Route over a couple of days.

There is also a long list of attractions in amongst the natural highlights – like the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, Tsakani Silk Farm, interaction with elephants, farmstalls, eateries, hiking and MTB trails, a coffee farm and roastery, art galleries and cultural village experiences.

There is far too much to do the route in one day. Best driven: during winter when it is dry, for the wet season brings with it mists and rain that, whilst beautiful, hinder the views. In summer the road sides are awash with wild white and pink lilies.

BERLIN FALLS

This province is known for its magnificent landscapes, and Berlin Falls testifies to the wonders that can be found within its borders. The part of Mpumalanga in which this waterfall is found is known, quite aptly, as the Panorama Route.

Did you know?
There is plenty of bird life and those with a keen interest in avian species should bring their binoculars and identification books along.
These falls tumble down in a single drop for some 80 metres, or about 260 feet, before crashing dramatically into a round basin that is an irresistible jade colour. Seeing the green waters set off by the red cliffs around them is something quite unforgettable and is best enjoyed from the observation platform above. The water comes from the Sabine River, which is popular for the bass fishing opportunities it presents. Entrance is free!

GIANTS FOOTPRINT LOTHAIR

Many consider the site to be a spiritual place and come here to pray; while geologists claim that it's merely a geological feature, which just happens to be proportionally shaped like a female's left foot. The footprint is believed to have been flat on the ground, but has tilted upwards due to the movement of the earth.

Resting a few meters below the footprint is a large boulder shaped like a human skull, especially when the sun is at a certain angle. This further adds a mythical element to the storytelling, as locals believe that it is the lava-encrusted skull of e'Mpuluzi's lover whom she was running towards.

Whichever version you choose to believe, one thing is undeniable: it's a sight to behold as you stand on the rocky outcrop with Goliath's Footprint on the one side and the pine forests in the valley below.

THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT

The Sudwala Butterfly Effect Nature Garden has been developed as part of a long term conservation project to provide host plants and flowers specifically aimed at increasing our local butterfly, bee and antelope populations.
Butterfly and bee numbers have declined dramaticly in recent years due to an increase in agricultural activity, pesticides and habitat loss.

This project aims to educate and bring people and nature together.

THE BUTTERFLY DOME

This is a butterfly conservation project to help increase butterfly numbers in nature. We do not buy butterflies in or release non local butterflies. When there are butterflies, we collect the eggs and caterpillars of the available species and place them in the dome on their specific host plant.

Adult butterflies are allowed to mate and lay their eggs on their host plants and then they are released. They will continue to mate and lay eggs in the wild for the next few weeks of their lives. In Nature from 500 eggs laid, only 2 adults usually survive.
In the dome we protect the fragile eggs and larve then we release the adults, thereby increasing the local adult butterfly population.

Please go in and look carefully for the different butterfly stages. There may be eggs and larva on the plants and if you are lucky some adults flying before they are released.

Find out more about the amazing butterfly life cycle.

THE UNITY LABYRINTH
The Unity Labyrinth is a journey of discovery, growth and change.
Walk the Labyrinth to find balance, to pray, to answer a question or see what comes up. Set an intention, forgive, meditate reduce stress, share or find peace
You can simply walk in wonder or wonder as you walk
The experience of walking a labyrinth is different for everyone and different each time you walk it .
There is no right or wrong way to walk a labyrinth. Do what ever feels right for you. Children love to run the labyrinth. Try, it can be liberating!!!

The unity labyrinth may also be walked by two people, one from each side who meet in the middle. A symbolic unity. At the center the two can exit on one path or leave on different paths.

AQUAPONICS
Sudwala Caves recently introduced a very exciting new feature to their already elaborate list of amenities: an aquaponics system. This system combines aquaculture (like the Koi fish seen in the image) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water). Wondering how this system works?

In aquaponics, the fish excretions and by-products form ammonia in the water. The ammonia is broken down by nitrifying bacteria, produced by algae, which is initially turned into nitrites and subsequently into nitrates. The nitrates are then utilized by the plants as nutrients, and in this process the plants ‘clean’ the water of ammonia. The water is circulated throughout the process; in the end, ammonia-free water gets pumped back into the fish-tank.

Be sure to check this new feature out, near the Sudwala Caves entrance, on your next visit!

FISH SPA:
Why not try a Fish Spa pedicure on your next trip? This unusual experience where fish exfoliate and clean your skin is a favourite among our visitors. At first, this might feel a bit uncomfortable and slightly ticklish, but as you get used to this weird sensation it becomes rejuvenating and absolutely relaxing. The dozens of tiny toothless Garra Rufu fish, in this almost natural-looking freshwater pool, almost instantly gather together to soothe and nibble on your feet.

SUDWALA DINOSAUR PARK
The Dinosaur Park is situated next to the Sudwala Caves, 30 minutes drive from Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, South Africa.

The museum displays life size models of pre-historic animals, ranging from amphibious reptiles, ancient reptiles, dinosaurs, pre-historic mammals, pre-historic man and more. The models were artistically and realistically sculpted by Jan van Zijl (also responsible for the black wildebeest on the old South African 2c coin).

Also on display are live Nile Crocodiles, perfectly adapted to survival and not much changed from their ancient relatives.

The park is set in a lush sub-tropical forest garden, where monkeys and red-breasted cuckoos abound. New is a magnificent ‘viewing deck’ from where the Rainforest Valley (National Heritage Site # 167) can be observed – with occasional glimpses of wild chacma baboons.

The park was the initiative of Mr. Theo Owen (1927 – 2013). The project was launched in 1972, and the park was officially opened in 1977. Many models were sculpeted near Johannesburg, and some were displayed at the Rand Easter Show in April 1976. The park was named after Mr. P.R. Owen (1900 – 1972) who was responsible for constructing the road up to the Sudwala Caves in the late 1950’s.

LISBON FALLS
Lisbon Falls is one of the most dramatic and scenic waterfalls in the Mpumalanga region.
The Lisbon Falls are situated in the heart of the waterfall area of Mpumalanga, where the number of these dramatic falls exceeds that of anywhere else in southern Africa. Lisbon Falls is 94 metres, or 308 feet, high, which makes it one of the highest in the province.

Being located just north of Graskop fourty minutes away from Hazyview outside the popular Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve, Lisbon Falls is convenient and accessible to locals and to visitors from all over the world.
There are lovely trees nearby, under which a picnic with friends and family can be enjoyed while the vistas are savoured. Bird lovers are also invited to visit Lisbon Falls and to keep an eye out for the many exciting avian species that inhabit the Panorama Route.
Although some sections are a little overgrown, the path is easy going and hikers will be rewarded with a refreshing swim at the end of the trail.

GODS WINDOW
Situated on the Drakensberg escarpment in Mpumalanga is God’s Window. Just one look down and you will begin to understand why it is called "God's Window".

Did you know?
The View from God's Window has inspired and awed thousands of painters and photographers from all over the world.
With magnificent views, canyons, rock formations and waterfalls, God's Window is truly an area of breathtaking scenic splendour. It is no wonder that Mpumalanga is known as Paradise Country.

Gods Window is so called for the panoramic view of the Lowveld more than 900 m down into lush indigenous forest clad ravine. The majestic cliffs plunge over 700 meters to the Lowveld and the private game reserves which have made the area one of South Africa's main wildlife destinations. God's Window is a small part of a 250km long earthwork of sheer cliffs and extravagant beauty. One can observe the hills and forests as far as the eye can see. In fact, it seems as if one can see forever!

There are numerous fantastic walks, hiking, horse and mountain bike trails. From the parking area a very steep stepped footpath along the edge of the escarpment leads to the actual view points.

For the best lookout points and exotic forest plants, steer away from the crowds and hike up into the clouds and the misty Rain Forest. Make sure you take a few refreshments along as it is very humid and an extremely steep and strenuous walk. God's Window is the perfect en-route stopping points for those visiting the Kruger National Park.

There are curio stalls and toilet facilities at the parking area. For just R10 one can witness one of the most magnificent sites in South Africa. God’s Window is truly a popular sight and for good reason! One can spend hours here just admiring the unsurpassed scenery.

BOURKE'S LUCK POTHOLES
If you can, begin your wander around Mpumalanga with Bourke's Luck Potholes, for they are without doubt incredible. Essentially they're the result of decades of swirling eddies of water where the Treur River meets the Blyde River, the tumult of which has caused extensive water erosion over time. The result is a series of cylindrical rock sculptures that look as though they would be more comfortable on the moon.
To see these geological wonders that are an amazing array of white, yellow and dark brown eddies of colour because of the soil present in the water, you'll need to travel roughly 35 kilometres due north of Graskop on the R532.

THE BLYDE RIVER CANYON AND THE 3 RONDAWELS
The Blyde River Canyon is the third largest canyon in the world 26 946 ha, after the Grand Canyon in the United States and the Fish River Canyon in Namibia, and is the largest 'green canyon' due to its lush subtropical foliage, with the deepest precipitous cliffs of any canyon on the planet.

One of the most-visited attractions in South Africa, the Blyde River Canyon is 26 kilometres in length and is, on average, around 800m deep. The dam itself, when full, is at an altitude of 665m (2182 feet).

The Blyde River Canyon Reserve extends along the Blyde River Canyon's winding path, which at every turn offers more and more impressive views over sheer edges droper personing 800m into the riverbed. Blyde River Canyon Reserve is situated against the Greater Drakensberg escarpment and includes natural wonders such as the Bourke's Luck Potholes, the Three Rondavels, Pinnacle Rock and God's Window. Many visitors to this region enjoy the visual splendour of combining the Panorama Route with exceptional game viewing in the Kruger National Park to create a spectacular itinerary in Mpumalanga.
Possibly the best view in the whole of the Blyde River Canyon is of the “Three Rondavels”, huge, round rocks, thought to be reminiscent of the houses or huts of the indigenous people, known as rondavels. The Canyon is famous for the Kadishi Tufa waterfall. At 200m (around 660 feet) in height it is the second tallest Tufa waterfall on earth. In the case of the Kadishi Tufa fall, the formation that has been produced strikingly resembles a face which is crying profusely, and is thus sometimes known as the weeping face of nature.

THE PINNACLE ROCK VIEWPOINT
The Pinnacle Rock is a massive quartzite rock that erupts from the earth’s surface and reaches some 30 metres in height. It is a freestanding rock that towers over the dense indigenous forest of Driekop Gorge in a dramatic display of nature’s quirks and the unique splendour of South Africa. It is littered with stunning, brightly-coloured aloes that not only add to the appeal amongst the local birds and insect species, but also make for extra beautiful photographs of the rock and its surrounds.

There are public ablutions available here, as well as vendors sitting at this attraction selling African curious and keepsakes. These stalls are a delight to visitors and locals alike and the vendors are friendly and helpful.
Graskop is a little forestry town on the very edge of the Drakensberg, offering breath-taking vistas and a very special experience of this country.
A nominal entrance fee is charged to see the rock and its breath-taking setting.
