Our Mission Statement

Safari4u Veterinary Programme is a tourist funded programme to give pre-vet students, or anyone interested in animals, conservation or the veterinary field, the opportunity to work with animals in an African veterinary setting. The programme consists of three main components - Wildlife, Community and Agriculture.
• Wildlife consists of opportunities such as game captures, game counts, darting with anti-parasitic drugs, wildlife identification, wildlife treatment and captive animal care. It also brings forth issues such as conservation, hunting and the Five Freedoms.
• Agriculture involves the livestock and large animal aspect of veterinary work with animals such as cattle (beef and dairy), goats, sheep, pigs and horses. It also includes issues such as abattoirs and disease control.
• The Community aspect is one of the most important and can cover livestock but mostly involves small animal care. South Africa has a large split in terms of socio-economics and as such many people cannot afford to help their animals when it comes to their health. Safari4u visits townships regularly to assist in anti-parasite treatment (dipping and dosing), wound care, community education on handling and treatment of pets and animals, and follow up treatments as needed. This will be expanded in 2017 to include the Wild Coast Community Clinic in which free health care will be provided for the lower socio-economic community’s animals of Chintsa and its surrounding areas. Sterilisations for the Chintsa township will be a priority in the initial opening stages of the clinic. Safari4u Veterinary Programme’s priorities are:
• Welfare of the animal
• Safety of students and staff
• Education of students
• Memorable experience for students

Safari4u Veterinary Programme will not consciously participate in any activity that involves the mistreatment of animals, or future mistreatment of animals. This includes, but is not limited to, activities such as lion cub petting, unauthorised hunting and/ or poaching activities, any activity in which the animal is utilised purely for the entertainment of people. Safari4u Veterinary Programme will assist within their means, and not extend past those. Unfortunately this may mean suggesting care at a facility better equipped to deal with the case in question. Safari4u Veterinary Programme is only able to assist physically with cases and is unable to assist individuals financially.

A veterinary programme that isn’t restricted to just one animal, one location or even one type of veterinary care!

Safari4u offers one if the widest range of experiences when it comes to a vet programme. In just the last few days, check out just some of the activities our students have participated in - large animal, small animal, wildlife and all in both community and commercial settings.

Not only do our students get a great learning experience, but the animals (and their owners) also benefit from the health care given.

Down on the farm - large animal work.
We not only do community work but assist commercial farmers with daily health work and veterinary care.
We get to learn and farmers get assistance in their daily tasks as well as help in animal health needs.
If you’re a farmer in the East London area who thinks you can offer an opportunity for vet students to learn from the animals on your farm, let us know!

Leopard Tortoises are the largest tortoise species in Southern Africa and the only one that can swim!

Do you know the 3 Testudines (Chelonians) and can you name the main differences between them?

A timely reminder to know where your garbage goes.

This turtle, currently in rehab at East London Aquarium, ate some plastic, likely thinking it was a jellyfish which is a key part of their diet.

Some types of plastics, when ingested, cause “floating syndrome.” When plastic accumulates in their body, it can block the gastrointestinal tract and cause a buildup of gas. This gas then causes the turtle to float on the surface of the ocean where they become unable to dive downwards to feed or avoid predators. Without intervention, many of these turtles will die.

Our students regularly visit the aquarium to learn about captive animal care and get to see
behind the scenes, often assisting with some of the daily care activities.
