Kleinbrak

Situated just outside of Klein Brak River on the Garden Route is an old abandoned power station that might have caught your eye as you sped past.

This abandoned building has since been conquered by lush trees growing through what was once a roof that makes you wonder what’s inside, and what it used to be.
According to UCT, the reason for closing down this power station was that the engineers situated the power station on the banks of the river so that the water could be used for cooling, but they did not consider that river is a tidal one.

The water was therefore salty, and corrosion to the materials occurred, leading to the station being decommissioned, and the machinery moved. The large pools surrounding the station were said to be used by locals as warm swimming pools. The building was never demolished, and nature took its course.

Today, the power station is surrounded by a township aptly named Powertown.

The Point Village in Mossel Bay has been a favourite family holiday destination for generations.

Grootbrak.

The name Great Brak River came about because of the brackish water of the brak rivers. The mouth is divided into two sandy strips of lagoon that surround a small island known as "Die Eiland". A single lane bridge links the mainland and the island which is well know for its timber holiday homes. This charming little island has become a refuge for many seeking solitude and has a number of holiday cottages and homes that have been in some of the families for generations!

10 Interesting Facts about the Garden Route

1. The Garden Route is over 300km long, stretching along the southern coastline of South Africa, from Mossel Bay in the west to Storms River in the east.

2. It gets its name from the rich, green forests, flowering fynbos and abundant streams, rivers and waterfalls occurring here.

3. It's easy to access from Cape Town and Port Elizabeth via the N2 highway.

4. An oceanic climate, with warm summers and cool winters makes it the mildest climate in South Africa and the second mildest in the world after Hawaii.

5. It is sandwiched between the Indian Ocean to the south and the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountain ranges to the north.

6. The Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma indigenous forests are a unique mixture of Cape Fynbos and temperate forest, and are home to some 300 bird species, including Knysna Loeries, Narina Trogons, Olive Thrushes, Chorister Robins, Cape Robins and Starred Robins.

7. The areas is home to a number of large mammal species including bushpig, bushbuck, blue duiker, baboon, vervet monkeys, reedbuck, leopards and caracals.

8. The Garden Route is part of the Fynbos Biome, containing a minimum of 45,000 different species of plant of which over 69% are endemic to this region and found nowhere else on earth.

9. The best times to visit are between October and March.
