It something that concerns many self-drive safari newcomers - getting into trouble with elephants!
They're big, strong and have been known to damage cars that drive too close. But, how close is too close? The key is to let the elephant tell you as every animal is different!
So, here's a few things you can look out for to let you know whether an elephant is comfortable with your presence or not....
๐ Relaxed elephants will be doing natural behaviours - feeding, drinking, exploring their surrounding. Their heads are often be lowered, tails swaying and ears back or gently wafting.
๐ Uncomfortable elephants will be alert and not engaging in normal behaviour. They might stand and stare with a raised head and ears out, or they might run away with their tails straight.
In general, we should listen to our instincts - we are designed to read animal behaviour and signs of stress or aggression so trust your gut. If you see an elephant getting upset, you should stay calm and *very slowly* back away - give the animal space and they will calm down!

This is the scene we woke up to last week ๐ฏ Luckily, freezing temperatures like this are very rare except at altitude - but it does get chilly at night, especially now in our safari high season!
But don't worry - daytime temperatures still reach 20-30 degrees even here in the South African winter so you'll be thawed out before lunch ๐

Did you know young bull elephants will often 'play-fight' by locking tusks and pushing the other backwards with their powerful heads? As well as building their strength, play-fighting is important to determine social rules and hierarchies in a 'safe' environment.
These two bulls were having a lot of fun tussling in the water! Having the upper hand (or is it trunk?), one bull places his trunk over the other in a display of dominance. We love watching these magnificent animals interacting in their natural habitat ๐

We saw a cheetah kill!!
Still one of our top wildlife moments this year ๐
They might not be in the "Big Five" but cheetah are actually far more endangered and highly specialized predators. Their entire bodies are dedicated to the pursuit of SPEED - streamlined frame with small ears and head, an enlarged ribcage for increased oxygen, powerful hind legs to propel them forward, permanently protracted claws like a dog for grip and even a long rudder-like tail to turn at speed. These incredible big cats are just fascinating!
It's no wonder they can get up to speeds of 120km/h ๐ฎ

Driving in soft sand is FUN ๐๐ In Maputo National Reserve we came across the steep, sandy climb that the car in front had already failed to get over - so now it was our turn ๐ A slight hiccup in the middle (OK maybe we should have taken our own advice and let some air out of the tires first!) BUT.... We made it ๐๐๐ Who knows why letting air out of the tires is a good idea when driving on soft sand? Let us know in the comments and we'll see who was paying attention on our past safaris ๐
What a special sight to see this gathering of zebra and wildebeest in Mozambique's Maputo National Reserve ๐๐ฆ Did you know that although both are grazers - meaning they feed on grass - they don't directly compete for food as each species prefers a different part of the grass to eat ๐พ In fact, grouping together like this is helpful as it leads to more eyes, ears and noses alert for predators. We love seeing the interesting dynamics between different species ๐

Why spend a fortune on fancy firelighters when all you need is a bit of elephant poo? ๐ Richi shows our guests how to make fire the easy way as the unknowing helpers - a herd of elephants - take a drink in the background! Thankfully, they're not at all bothered that we are burning their dung ๐๐ฉ๐ฅ Why does it work? Elephants have terrible digestive systems - meaning what comes out the other side often still includes lots of undigested twigs, leaves and grasses. Compacted into balls and baked dry in the African sun - they're quick to light and dont burn too fast....nature's convenient firelighters!
