After a very cool and overcast few days Oom Len, our male Nile Crocodile (Crocodilus niloticus) is enjoying the sun.
When trying the Green Mambas (Dendroaspis angusticeps) with food they all seemed very keen but only three of the four ate. Number four is photo shy π.
Yesterday we said fair well to Kwanele. He has been with us as an intern, sponsored by SANBI since April last year. He is of to Esemvelo KZN Wildlife for the remainder of his internship and we wish him well for the future. Hopefully he will get to do his Masters degree he has been wanting to get started . Thanks for joining us.
Not long after introducing the tree into her cage, the King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) went to investigate.
Our Nile Monitor (Varanus niloticus) doesn't often use the branch but managed to sneak a photo before she went into the water.
These 2 Schlegel's blind snakes (Afrotyphlops schlegelii) were brought into the park after being rescued near a road. Beautifully marked and coloured. They live underground and are normally only seen after heavy rains. We released them in the gardens here at the park.
Our female albino Burmese Python (Python bivittatus) having a stretch in front of Jiro and Nkululeko, the roof repair men. Solly is their backup in case she gets too close π. They are having to stay in large containers while we sort out the ceilings that the tree broke.
A slow-mo video where our West African Gaboon adder (Bitis gabonica) lashes a rat such speed and power amazing
Not the greatest sight to see on a Monday morning just when you think you are getting on top of things .The branch fell during the night, smashed through the roof and into three of the cages. Luckily no animals were harmed or lost.
Our Gumprecht's vipers ( Trimeresurus gumprexhti) after being sprayed with water which they drink. Beautiful snakes especially when the sun catches the droplets.
Our Sailfin Dragon, Milo (Hydrosaurus microlophus) had a revamp of his cage. We added thicker branches and he seems very happy.
I often post pictures of the Black Mambas (Dendroaspis polylepis) and here again is our big male who has just shed. A bit of a favourite because they just seem more aware of what's going on. "Waker" is a good Afrikaans word to use.
Yesterday this little guy was found when turning on the garden tap and it got washed out. It's a Golden Leaf-folding frog (Afrixalus aureus) and only 15 mm long. We don't get to see them often so a nice surprise.
The beautiful head of our Western Green Mamba (Dendroaspis viridis). Very different scales to our Eastern Green Mamba found on our tropical east coast of KwaZulu Natal.
Another beautiful display animal we acquired recently is this Puff Adder (Bits arietans) originally from Togo, West Africa. Some of the longest records for this species are from Togo.
One of my favourites in terms of looks is our Eastern Tiger Snake (Telescopus. s semiannulatus) seen here having her weekly meal.
A very relaxed Diesel, our American Alligator ( Alligator mississippiensis) with Mulweli in gum boots
Nolwazi keeping one of the Bearded dragons warm. From a boiling Saturday to a freezing Monday our poor animals don't know what's hit them.
A very enthusiastic group at Uplands Primary school visited a few weeks back.
Another superb day with the Uplands Primary school kids. This was with the grade 1's. A really great group of children. thanks Sally for inviting Perry's Bridge Reptile Park over and allowing us to share our passion.
A colourful collage of reptiles awaited me when visiting the Montisori pre school in Valencia. A very keen group of youngsters I enjoy visiting.
Farewell to a beautiful snake.
A sad day at the park today. Our large Forest Cobra ( Naja melanolueca) somehow broke its back in the cage and had to be put down. It was a magnificent specimen and will be missed. We get attached to our snakes like people do to their dogs and losing one, especially with his character is never easy.
Some of our visitors, Beau and Fedde from Holland hanging out with our Burmese Python (Python bivittatus) and Rock Monitors (Varanus albigularis). It's been such a pleasure having our overseas visitors back.
Temperatures are starting to get to a point where we can start feeding and not worry too much about load shedding. Not all that have been offered took but these Gre-banded King Snakes (Lampropeltis alterna) are certainly keen.
Slowly but surely in between their other work Solly and Osama are getting the new Nile Monitor (Varanus niloticus) enclosure done.
It's school holidays in Europe and we're grateful to all the tourists that have been visiting the park. Here Morris is showing a group from Holland the Bearded Dragon (Pogona vitticeps). Being a very cool wet day we keep them inside on heating pads and take them out when needed.
Today we had the pleasure of accommodating Wonderland pre school. Lots of enthusiastic learners. Thanks to Morris and the interns, Kwanele and Mulweli for showing them around.
Today this beautiful female Southern Rock Python (Python natalensis) was rescued by Zander Groenewald near Dagama dam. She is with us now and will be released away from the workers accommodation when it warms up a little.
One of the most beautiful snakes at our park, the Rhino Gaboon Adder (Bitis rhinoceros) enjoying the morning winter sun. Lekker in the Lowveld.

During the cold winter nights our snakes that need it have their heaters on which gets quite expensive these days. Our Horned Adder (Bits caudalis) has a heat spot rather than a heater. Turned off during the night but on in the day. #mpumalanga #mpumalangatourism #lowveld #lowveldtourism #Hazyview #hazyviewtourism #welovereptiles #herpetology #perrysbridge #perrysbridgereptilepark #thingstodo #africainspiration #schooltours #education #opmyeish
Mating season for some. Our Black Mambas (Dendroaspis polylepis) have started. Many snakes mate in spring but some like these Mambas and in some areas Puff Adders (Bitis arietans) will mate into early winter. The action seen in the clip is called pre copulatory behaviour where the male has to stimulate the female. It looks a bit vigorous but hopping he pulls the right moves. #mpumalanga #mpumalangatourism #lowveld #lowveldtourism #Hazyview #hazyviewtourism #welovereptiles #herpetology #perrysbridge #perrysbridgereptilepark #thingstodo #africainspiration #schooltours #education

Another yummy meal for our Giant Bullfrogs (Pyxicephalus adspersus). 2 mice every Saturday during the warmer months keeps them happy. Guests are often surprised that they eat meat π. #mpumalanga #mpumalangatourism #lowveld #lowveldtourism #perrysbridge #perrysbridgereptilepark #hazyview #welovereptiles #herpetology #thingstodo #africainspiration #schooltour
I at last managed to video Diesel, our male American Alligator (Alligator mississipiensis) roaring. He normally stops as soon as we get close. They do this to advertise to females and keep other males out. #reptiles #herpetology #snakes #mpumalanga #tourism #southafrica #mpumalangatourism #lowveld #lowveldtourism #perrysbridge #perrysbridgereptilepark #Hazyview #thingstodo #schooltours #africainspiration
These little Horned adders ( Bits caudalis) are a fairly new arrival at the park. They had mated and were gravid on arrival. The 1st female dropped and none of the neonates survived the 1st night. This females young dropped today will hopefully fare better. There were 11 altogether and double the size I say in the videoπ¬. #perrysbridgereptilepark #perrysbridge #welovereptiles #hazyview #africainspiration #thingstodo #schooltours
Once again watching our Rhino Gaboon Adder (Bitis rhinoceros) strike.
Lunch time for our big Retic (Python reticulatus). Not used to chickens and taking a bit longer to get down.

Yesterday Tom took a video of a girdled lizard (Cordylus sp.) showing how they harvest water. You can see the moisture spreading over the back. According to research several lizard species that live in arid areas have developed special abilities to collect water with their bodies' surfaces and to ingest the so collected moisture. This is called rain- or moisture-harvesting. ... Within this capillary system the water is transported to the mouth where it is ingested. #perrysbridge #perrysbridgereptilepark #Hazyview #welovereptiles #africainspiration #thingstodo
Feeding our fussy Burmese Python (Python bivittatus) #perrysbridge #perysbridgereptilepark #welovereptiles #Hazyview #africainspiration #thingstodo
Our first feed for some of the snakes since the beginning of winter. This male Black Mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) dropped his mouse the first time round. #perrysbridgereptilepark #perrysbridge #welovereptiles #hazyview #thingstodo #africainspiration
In our demonstration area we have a couple of Puff Adders (Bitis arietans) used in educational talks. Living in many varied habitats they sometimes go for long periods without water. In the video you can see how they drink without having a pool of water. #perrysbridgereptilepark #welovereptiles #perrysbridge #hazyview #thingstodo #africainspiration
