Deadvlei is a white clay pan located near the more famous salt pan of Sossusvlei, inside the Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia.

Also written DeadVlei or Dead Vlei, its name means "dead marsh" 💀💀You need to walk approximately 2km’s from car park into the sand basin so make sure you go early in the morning or late afternoon as the sun and heat will punish you ☀️🔥If you can, camp within the park so you access the Dead Vlei early before the crowds arrive. It makes for incredible photography ⛺️📸 Namibia is an incredible and diverse destination in Africa.

Zanzibar is a small island off the coast of Tanzania. It’s beaches are quiet, no mass tourism and the history of the island is incredible. It used to be the capital of Oman and the architecture reflects that in the city center of Stone Town 🕌

Zambia. Home of the original walking safari

Visiting Zambia for the first time as a young radio journalist-cum-travel writer many years back, I discovered what I today – with all of southern and east Africa in my backpack – still regard as my favourite safari destination.

I found myself laughing at the number of leopards I saw, caught up in a Zambezi river rapid called ‘tumble drier’, dodging ladies of the night in a Lusaka live music venue, and being eye-height with a hippo in a canoe on the Lower Zambezi, while two-metre crocs sunned themselves on the sandbank to the left.

That particular trip had started in Lusaka, meeting a Greek gentleman and his art-collecting wife at their beautiful lodge and nature reserve just outside the city. Fast forward a couple decades and with TribalTourist we visit the new incarnation of that same property, possibly the last word in Lusaka luxury. 

For me however, not forgetting rafting twenty-two turbulent whitewater rapids down below Victoria Falls on the Zambezi river*, the real show had started in South Luangwa National Park (SLNP)

Wow, we have never seen that before.
Our guests sent this from their recent safari to Kenya. They were on their game drive when two lions had made a Buffalo kill. Normally Buffalo are lazy and don't interfere. It's a strange thing to witness because with so many of them, you think they would help their fellow creature. On this occassion, they all rushed in but it was too late.

For some people on safari, it can be a tough thing to witness a kill, especially for children but we feel a necessary thing to see. It's the circle of life unfolding in front of you.

Reducing CO2 content in the atmosphere is critical to preserve a liveable planet. Spekboom is exceptionally good at pulling CO2 out of the air and converts it into soil-carbon. One hectare of Spekboom will absorb 4.5 tonnes of CO2 per annum in its life-time (approximately 40 years).

In the semi-arid Little Karoo region, growing conditions are ideal for this resilient plant. Thriving in poor soils, it tolerates both drought and frost. In the cool months, Spekboom photosynthesises like other plants, opening its stomata during the day to absorb carbon dioxide. During drier times, the plant has the ability to open its stomata at night in order to prevent water loss during the heat of the day.

Why does Africa always get such a bad wrap?
It's like saying the America's have Mpox.

Please people, read the facts.

Mpox is an STD which is primarily transmitted via sexual contact. This latest outbreak is concentrated in the Democratic Republic of Congo in central Africa.

There is no outbreak in other African countries at the moment. The risk in Africa's safari and tourism destinations to the general traveller is virtually zero.

It's another example of the WHO trying to scare people travelling to Africa. You have to ask, why are we always the bad guys?

There are no fish finders to find the fish or the reefs they frequent. Simply generations of passed down knowledge that navigates them to the exact spots. It's incredible to witness. But the general direction maintains as they make their way from Tanzania’s Serengeti - the Ndutu plains, the savannah that spills from the foothills of the Gol Mountains, through the Western Corridor and over the border into Kenya’s Masai Mara, accompanied by herds of zebra with whom they share an ancient partnership of symbiosis. The zebra’s keen vision, the wildebeest’s excellent hearing and better sense of smell mean that the two species literally look and listen out for each other. Just as well: the other groupies that tag along are predators who pick them off as they go: lions, cheetahs, hyenas.

The wildebeest migration is the largest and most spectacular wildlife phenomena on the planet: two million animals on the march along the same 1800 kilometre circuit every year in search of water and fresh grazing. They don’t move as one, there is no leader, it can look chaotic: straggling lines of lugubrious looking antelope, kicking up the dust, huffing, puffing, honking. Its not a tidy head-to-toe line; everybody’s all over the place. Some are going backwards as if they’ve lost their place in the line or their internal GPS is slightly off. But it’s a system that has sustained a species since the sixties.
