***EU’s new border system***

Authorities are predicting a massive increase in wait times at EU entry points next year due to border reforms that come into effect by May.

First-time travellers who do not need a visa will have to apply for a new travel permit, and be fingerprinted when crossing the outer Schengen border.

In the hope of protecting the Schengen area and tightening checks on third-country nationals, the EU has been preparing for years to introduce a new entry-exit system (EES) that will require all foreigners seeking entry to the territory to undergo registration on arrival. This involves providing fingerprints and other information.

The EES will help to ensure that unchecked migrants in Europe are identified and processed, and that overstayers are punished.

As per Schengen rules, non-EU, European Economic Area (EEA), or Swiss citizens can only remain in the Schengen border-free area for up to 90 days out of any 180-day period.

Those who break the rules will get caught immediately when they enter or exit the Schengen area, as their biometric data will be stored by Frontex, the agency responsible for Europe’s border security.

It’s expected that the new system will lead to border delays, at least during the initial period of registrations.

EU countries have noted their concern about the new system, notably Germany, which said control time for passengers would increase significantly during the roll-out of EES. Austria also expects processing times to double.

A draft law leaked by French news site Atlantico confirms that France is planning to reintroduce COVID-19-related requirements at its borders, mandating either proof of vaccination, proof of recovery from the virus, or negative test results from arrivals.

The mandate would apply to all international visitors over the age of 12 until the end of March 2023.

Some more great news …..

The Australian Government has announced that travellers will no longer have to complete the Digital Passenger Declaration giving their COVID-19 vaccination status. This follows changes to the Biosecurity Act which comes into force from midnight on Wednesday, July 6.

The changes mean that all visa holders can travel to Australia without needing a travel exemption and that vaccination status is no longer a criterion determining entry to the country. 🛫🛫🛫

Qantas has good news for South Africans with family living in the Perth area.

The Australian airline will start flights between Perth and Johannesburg on November 1, operating three flights a week.

This will be the only direct service from South Africa to Western Australia, complementing Qantas’s existing four-times-weekly Johannesburg-Sydney service, which re-started post-pandemic on January 6 this year.

Travellers coming to South Africa were previously required to show proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test and would be subjected to an antigen test if they hadn’t complied. Those regulations have now been scrapped.
