The Cape Point Nature Reserve, part of SANPARKS, is truly an awe-inspiring place where the sea and the sky merge in the far distance. The drive through the reserve is incredibly scenic. From the entrance, the road winds through rolling fynbos-covered hills, with patches of vibrant wildflowers adding splashes of colour. Wildlife and bird life is abundant and the naughty baboons made themselves a nuisance as promised! The highlight of Cape Point is the lighthouse at the top of the hill. There’s an option to hike up or take the funicular, and I chose the hike to soak in every view along the way. Standing by the old lighthouse, you can look out across endless ocean vistas, where it truly feels like you’re at the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The wind is fierce up there, it’s almost a challenge to stand still and take in the view without being nudged by the gusts. Walking along the cliffs, I found a lookout spot to watch the waves crashing far below. For me, Cape Point was more than just an impressive landscape; it was a humbling reminder of nature’s power. I thought about the ships that had passed by Cape Point for centuries, some that has succumbed to the dangerous seas. It’s a place where you can see first hand how raw and powerful nature can be.
