During some very bad storms earlier in the month a young white backed vulture was sadly knocked from the nest and ended up on the floor. Park rangers in Kruger found him and were advised to place him back on the nest, but sadly there was no nest left for him to return too…it had been destroyed in the storms. This is incredibly sad as it meant certain death for the youngster if left on the floor, he would either starve to death as mum and dad only feed him on the nest, or he would fall prey to a nearby predator. It was decided to take the youngster and bring him to us where he was checked over. Luckily, he did not sustain any injuries from the fall, he was just dehydrated and quite skinny. As he is so young, we made him a nest for him to stay in. Once he was eating well from a dish on his own, we moved him (and his nest) into our mixed vulture enclosure. This is so that he knows he is in fact a vulture and can learn natural feeding habits from the resident vultures. We hope that once he is big enough, we can harness him with a satellite tracker and release him. The harness means that we can observe where he goes and if he is successful. If there are signs that he is stationary in one spot for a significant amount of time it means we can send people to go and check to see if he is injured etc.

We have had some beautiful rain this season so long, the reserve has lovely lush trees but Mr Old man still prefers to come spend time in the camp.
