How great for Shoes to be able to see one of our guests to Kruger National Park at our stand at Vakantiebeurs last weekend! Not only was it a great encounter but both visitors even spoke on our behalf to other stand visitors in Dutch about their safari experience with Khalanga, we couldn’t have hoped for better help and advertising 😅 thanks Brett, also for the delicious stroopwaffels you brought us!

Recently we were able to witness this male and female lions part of the Kumani Pride. They’re finishing off the rest of the buffalo they’ve killed together. They are in their “honeymoon”, they mate every 20-30 minutes for a couple of days to ensure conception. Lionesses are receptive throughout the year, unlike other species in Kruger such as impala and other carnivores, that have a “rutting” (mating) season in autumn, thus giving birth in spring when there is fresh grass and leaves.

Our guests at our tented camp this week have the most amazing sightings so far; with especially one offering once in a lifetime picture opportunities! Not unfortunately, taken with a professional camera but still a few memorable shots were taken of this beautiful and strong female leopard on a fresh impala kill. What a way to start a safari adventure!

With rising temperatures comes rain and with it, fresh grass; leaves, and plenty of nourishment for impalas and other grazers and browsers. The first rain signals the female pregnant impalas that the conditions are very good to give birth because of an abundance of food and as a consequence, enough milk from the mothers. Impala ewes (females) can in fact delay giving birth to their calves by several weeks, until the first rain and therefore perfect conditions.

This week, we had the privilege of providing a wildlife experience to kids and parents of 2 charities dedicated to helping kids in rural areas with disabilities - Rethabile Center - facilitated by akaani_npc and claudiaschnell_7sensessafaris. Spending t here whole day in Kruger Natuonal Park with 3 of our guides, the blistering temperatures did nothing to diminish the joy in the eyes of the kids, and the wonder at seeing some of the animal species native to that no doubt many if not most of them were seeing for the first time despite living right next to the park. A great Christmas outing indeed!

Within days of the first heavy rain of the season, fresh grass and leaves begins to make an appearance in Kruger Park, transforming the bone dry landscape in a paradise for the animals; full of fresh food for browsers and grazers; creating ideal conditions to welcome the new generation of baby impalas warthogs, giraffes and other seasonal breeders. Other animals like elephants and lions breed at any time of the year.

Male and female members of the Kumani pride resting at Kumani Dam . There are about 1600 lions in Kruger National Park. Male lions are considerably larger than the females; and their impressive appearance with the mane and sheer size make them one of the animals most visitors to Kruger Park wish to see. The best time to see them is in the early morning or late afternoon and evening; for example, at a dam or water hole where they come to drink or perhaps stalk potential prey that has come to drink. Sometimes they can just be seen lying or walking in the middle of the road, much to the delight of Kruger Park visitors.

A dwarf mongoose is becoming food of a juvenile Marshall Eagle. The Marshall Eagle is a very large “booted” eagle (see feathers on legs). Females are larger than males, and juveniles look different as their plumage is distinct from that of the adults. They only reach adult plumage at around 7 years of age.

The Marshall Eagle is an apex predator, also called the “leopard of the air”, the adults can take prey as large as a jackal while juveniles go for smaller prey such as in this case the dwarf mongoose.

A small family group of elephants is enjoying a mud bath at the near empty dam at the end of the dry season. They are lying down in the mud, trying to cool off as the heat increases during the day in preparation for the first thunderstorms and big rain (which has by now, thankfully arrived!). Another purpose of the mud bath is to kill parasites; the ticks suffocate under the drying mud.

The Klipspringer (Rock Jumper) is one of Kruger Park’s remarkable antelopes. Its habitat are rocky outcrops, and its pointy hoofs are especially adapted to balance securely on the rocks. They are territorial and live in small family groups. They are mixed bowsers and grazers, meaning they eat both grass and leaves. We observed them making an alarm call warning other family members about an approaching danger - in this case, ourselves- but their main predators are leopards, the African Rock Python or Marshall Eagles or the Caracal (African lynx).

A white rhino mother and calf in the dusty winter season of Kruger National Park are going towards the water. While many have received the first rain of the season, some areas of the park were dry until a week back.

Redbilled Oxpeckers are catching a ride on the back of the rhinos while removing the parasites. They also act as a security and are on the lookout for any potential danger. Humans and lions can both be a threat to rhinos. Lions can especially target the rhino calves and humans do illegal hunting (poaching) of rhinos which threatens to wipe out the entire species.

What a beautiful female leopard our guest were privileged to see resting on top of a rock with her cubs! The cubs are really not easy to see, scurrying behind the rocks most of the time; which was of course, the idea. This female leopard has been observed making use of this rocky outcrop to hide previous litters of cubs before. Leopard cubs are in danger of being killed by other predators such as hyenas, lions, wild dogs and even other male leopards that are not their fathers.

Redbilled Oxpeckers just finished their work of removing parasites from these 2 cheerful hippos on a beautiful day in the Riverbend of Ximpandani. The hippos just finished warming up and now make their return to cool down in the water.

Our guests were witnessing some lion interaction within the pride. The lionesses are bonding with each other and the male is seen relaxing in between them. One of the lionesses is seen wearing a collar with a tracker, that is non invasively recording her whereabouts and movements within the park, and contributes to science and conservation without inhibiting her daily activity.
