While traveling the scenic Panorama Route, you may come across this historic signboard commemorating the Trichardt-Potgieter expedition. This plaque marks a significant moment in Voortrekker history.
Close to this spot, a group of Voortrekkers, led by Trichardt and Potgieter, set up camp by the river while some of the men ventured out to search for a way down the steep escarpment. Days turned to weeks, and when the scouting party didn’t return at the expected time, the waiting group feared the worst. In their sorrow, they named the river near their camp the Treur River ("River of Sorrow").
But the story didn’t end there. The men eventually returned, having successfully found a route. Overcome with relief and joy, the reunited party renamed another nearby river the Blyde River ("River of Joy"). These names remain today as part of the emotional and geographical history of the region.
