This International Women’s Day on 8 March 2025, imagine a world without women - impossible as all life would cease to exist. Now imagine Africa without these women, these pioneers in conservation. This International Women’s Day, Bushbaby Tours honours five extraordinary women who shattered stereotypes and left a lasting legacy in conservation.
Dian Fossey (1932–1985): In 1967, Dian began studying gorillas in Rwanda, exposing poaching and illegal wildlife trade. Her fearless work saved a species, and her research at the Karisoke Research Centre laid the foundation for modern gorilla conservation. Her legacy continues through the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.
Wangari Maathai (1940–2011): Wangari proved conservation and human rights go hand in hand. Her Green Belt Movement planted millions of trees, empowering women, restoring landscapes, and inspiring a global reforestation movement. She was the first African woman to win a Nobel Prize.
Daphne Sheldrick (1934–2018): Daphne pioneered elephant rescue at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, raising orphaned calves and reintroducing them to the wild. She developed the first milk formula for infant elephants, and her trust remains a leader in elephant conservation.
Jane Goodall: Jane transformed primate research by discovering chimpanzees use tools. For over 60 years, she has led global conservation efforts, advocating for habitat protection and environmental education. The Jane Goodall Institute now operates worldwide, championing community-driven solutions.
Beverly Joubert: Through film and conservation, Beverly has spent 40 years protecting Africa’s big cats. She co-founded the Big Cats Initiative with National Geographic and Great Plains Conservation, a groundbreaking ecotourism company securing wild spaces across Africa.
Bushbaby Tours celebrates these fearless women and all those who continue their fight for Africa’s wildlife.

If you visit Letaba in the Kruger Park, you have to drop in at the Elephant Hall. The museum has great air-conditioning, offering a respite from the heat, it’s right next to the shop, and it houses the tusks of the Magnificent Seven. These tusks are not replicas. This is the real deal, incredibly huge, and they will dwarf any man.Standing beneath the towering tusks, it’s impossible not to think about the elephants behind them. These Magnificent Seven had magical names like Mafunyane, meaning the Irritable One, and Ndlulamithi, meaning Taller and Trees, with big personalities to match. Some were known for their short tempers, and most spent their lives in the north of Kruger, moving through endless crackling mopaniveld in the heat and dust, carrying the sheer weight of their ivory every day. Six of the Magnificent Seven lived long lives and passed away of old age, but the seventh, Dzombo, already at a good age himself, was unfortunately killed by poachers. Luckily, the tusks were retrieved by the section ranger before the poachers could make off with them. These were giants in every sense, icons of the wild, shaped by their environment, their history etched into the land and into their tusks. It’s also worth purchasing an excellent, newly updated book called Kruger Legends by Kirsty Redman, featuring all the past and present tuskers of the Greater Kruger, available only in the museum. It’s exciting to flip through it and see if you’ve spotted any of the living legends. All profits from the sale of this book contribute directly to environmental education.Bushbaby Tours and Transfers will take you there. The whole family arriving for Christmas Day lunch!
When we asked Solly, one of our directors, to name his favorite place in Africa, he immediately said the Kruger National Park. Of course we told him that was too obvious! So he chose Tswalu Kalahari, South Africa’s largest private game reserve and home to rare and endangered species, including the elusive pangolin, aardvark, brown hyena, and African wild dog, providing unparalleled wildlife viewing opportunities. The reserve’s commitment to conservation is matched by luxurious accommodations, ensuring guests enjoy comfort while supporting vital ecological preservation efforts.
Solly’s choice reflects a deep appreciation for destinations that harmoniously blend natural beauty, wildlife diversity, and exceptional guest experiences.

Big Birding Saturday takes place in South Africa on 7 December 2024 and teams across the country are gearing up for an exciting day of birdwatching, all with one goal: to spot as many bird species as possible. The rules are simple - teams have 24 hours to identify as many species as they can within a defined region. While rare and elusive birds are always highly prized, every bird counts. Even the most common species play a role in contributing to a team’s total by the end of the day. Whether it’s rarer species like the elusive buff-spotted flufftail and the endemic Cape Parrot, or more frequently spotted birds like the noisy Egyptian Goose and a gentle Laughing Dove, each sighting adds to the tally, making every moment of the day count. Big Birding Saturday brings together enthusiasts of all levels. It’s a celebration of South Africa’s birdlife, from the everyday to the extraordinary. Even if you haven’t registered a team, you can still join in, just get outside and start counting!
