Did you know that the Papiesfontein land is home to an extraordinary network of large and important wetlands that have been recognized for their conservation importance since the 1980s?

These wetlands are formed by the barrier vleis between the primary dunes and the hinterland along the coastline between the Kabeljous and Gamtoos estuary mouths.

In 2018, the South African Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) has classified these wetlands as vulnerable and in urgent need of conservation. That is why we will continue to advocate for the greater kabeljous area to be declared a nature reserve to protect the natural biodiversity of the land for the benefit of local communities.
