What am I? Do you know?

The African Barred Owlet is a species of small owl in the family Strigidae found in much of southern, central and eastern Africa.

The African Barred Owlet is partly diurnal. Calling occurs mainly at dusk and dawn but also through the night on calm and clear nights. It is frequently observed on open perches scanning for prey, even during the day. It roosts within cover, often in a natural cavity in a tree. If they are detected by other birds during the day they will often be subjected to mobbing.

The African Barred Owlet feed on small mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs, insects, scorpions and caterpillars which are normally caught following a short flight from a perch

Species identity: African Barred Owlet, Glaucidium capense

What is Big 5 in South Africa?

The term “Big Five” originally referred to the difficulty in hunting the lion, leopard, black rhino, elephant and African buffalo. These five large African mammal species were known to be dangerous and it was considered a feat by trophy hunters to bring them home.

However, today they hold as the 5 most after animals to search for in the African bush.

WORLD LION DAY (10th August 2023)

The history of World Lion Day started in 2013 when two filmmakers, Dereck and Beverly Joubert ( & ), founded the Big Cat Initiative, a global campaign to shine a light on the critical issues facing the planet's lion populations.

Recognising that lions were facing a potential crisis, they sought to alert the world to the plight of these big cats. They realised that there was a decline in their numbers, with habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, poaching, and disease among the threats faced.

Species identity: Lion, Panthera Leo
