The History of the Venda people of South Africa can be traced as far back as the 6th Century, to the establishment located at the meeting point of the Limpopo and Shashe Rivers. This became the Mapungubwe Kingdom.
In the 9th Century, under King Shiriyadenga, the kingdom was involved in the trading of gold and ivory with Egypt, China and India before it moved its headquarters northward in the 1300s.
Among the golden jewelry and figurines that were unearthed in the area is an 8000 year old golden rhinoceros, currently housed at the University of Pretoria, along with the rest of the Mapungubwe collection.
Mapungubwe (Hill of Jackals) was declared a UNESCO Heritage site in 2003.
