Save Our Sausage Trees - Protecting the Okavango Delta

We’re excited to share an update on our SOS - Save Our Sausage Trees Project! In December 2024, five new fiberglass mekoro were delivered to polers in the Okavango Delta. The Sunway Safaris Family proudly contributed 50% of the funds for this initiative.

The Problem
The traditional wooden mekoro, carved from the Sausage Tree (Kigelia Africana), has long been an iconic way to explore the Okavango Delta. However, the demand for mekoro has led to unsustainable tree harvesting, threatening the delicate balance of this unique ecosystem.

The Solution
Fiberglass mekoro are durable and eco-friendly alternatives to wooden ones. They help preserve the Sausage Trees while allowing local polers to continue sharing this incredible experience with visitors, and have the opportunity to earn a living doing so.

How You Can Help
Our fund supports local polers by covering 50% of the cost of a fiberglass mokoro.
Clients on tours visiting the Okavango Delta have the opportunity to donate directly to the fund.
Together, we can help protect this remarkable environment for future generations.

Let’s work together to conserve the beauty of the Okavango Delta!
Leave a positive impact wherever you travel!

Imagine a place where golden sand dunes cascade into the shimmering blue waves of the Atlantic Ocean—a surreal meeting of two extreme worlds. This breathtaking phenomenon occurs along Namibia’s iconic Skeleton Coast, one of Africa’s most awe-inspiring landscapes.

In the heart of Namibia’s endless dunes, the mighty oryx stands as a symbol of resilience and grace. With its long, elegant horns and striking markings, the oryx embodies the spirit of survival in one of the harshest environments on earth.

Adapted to thrive in this arid landscape, the oryx is a true desert wanderer, and spotting one in the wild is always a breathtaking experience.

On accommodated adventures we explore the Okavango Delta, on foot and in mokoro's, from our base camp deep within the delta. Clients camp in a pre-erected mobile tented camp with camp stretchers, linen and an en-suite chemical toilet. This is a great opportunity for clients to truly immerse themselves in the wonder of this amazing wilderness location.

Sunway Safaris Good2Go: The Okavango Kopano Mokoro Community Trust is run by the communities on the south eastern sector of the Okavango Delta with entrance and camping fees paid to the trust, and wages paid directly to the individual guides/polers. Work is split between community members on a rotation basis administered by each village. By working with these communities we help provide sustainable economic benefit for conservation of the area. Please also see the Sunway SOS Save Our Sausage Trees project.

One of the most authentic moments on a Sunway Safaris journey through Zimbabwe is witnessing local school children walking to school. This daily ritual offers a unique glimpse into the vibrant culture and community life of rural Zimbabwe. As the children walk together, often in bright uniforms, they greet each other with smiles and laughter, embodying the spirit of resilience and hope.

This experience not only connects our travelers to the local culture but also serves as a reminder of the importance of education in these communities.

Rising majestically out of the heart of the Namib Desert, Dune 45 is one of the most iconic sights in Namibia! Standing 170 meters tall, its striking red sands—shaped over millions of years—capture the essence of the world’s oldest desert.

Named after its location at the 45th kilometer marker of the road to Sossusvlei, this giant offers an adventure like no other. From the top, panoramic views of the vast desert stretch out in every direction.

This is a place where time seems to stand still, where nature's beauty is on full display.

There's something magical about exploring Hwange National Park in the early morning light. As the sun begins to rise, the park comes alive with the sounds of the African bush. The cool, crisp air is filled with anticipation as we set out on our game drive, with the golden light casting a warm glow over the landscape.

Hwange's diverse wildlife, from herds of elephants to stealthy predators, is most active at this time, offering incredible sightings and unforgettable moments. The stillness of the morning, broken only by the calls of birds and the distant roar of a lion, creates an atmosphere of pure serenity.

The desert elephants around Brandberg, Namibia, are a remarkable example of adaptation and survival in one of the harshest environments on Earth. Unlike their savannah counterparts, these unique elephants have evolved to thrive in the arid conditions of the Namib Desert. With longer legs and smaller bodies, they are perfectly suited for long journeys in search of food and water. These elephants are known for their ability to navigate through rocky terrain and dig deep into dry riverbeds to access hidden water sources.

Brandberg, with its towering granite mountain and ancient rock art, provides a stunning backdrop for encountering these resilient creatures. The elephants here play a crucial role in the delicate desert ecosystem, contributing to seed dispersal and the overall health of their environment. Witnessing these magnificent animals in their natural habitat is a truly awe-inspiring experience, offering a glimpse into the incredible resilience of nature.

Did you know that Cheetah are labelled as "vulnerable" on the RED list, and are considered to be extinct in 29 countries within Southern Africa. The main reasons for their rapid decline includes loss of habitat (and therefore loss of prey) due to human expansion, high mortality due to territorial conflicts between competing coalitions of males, snares, and removal for the exotic pet trade (mainly cubs).

These exquisite cats are the fastest of all land mammals, reaching a staggering speed of 112 km/h in just 3 seconds. Their bodies are adapted to this in many ways. They have a long, flexible spine which works like a tension band propelling them forward with an extended stride. Their long, flattish tail acts as a rudder, and counter balance while turning at high speeds, and Cheetahs have large nostrils and expansive, air-filled sinuses that support their unique respiratory system enabling them to increase their breathing rate from a normal 60 breaths per minute to 150 breaths per minute.

Did you know that Botswana is home to one of Africa’s most incredible wildlife spectacles? Each year, thousands of zebras embark on a stunning migration, traveling over 500 kilometers from the Chobe River floodplains to the Nxai Pan National Park. This journey, one of the longest-known zebra migrations, showcases nature's remarkable rhythms and the resilient spirit of these beautiful creatures.

What lovely feedback, and images from our client Birgit who has just finished the Walking South Africa tour. Happy Friday everyone!

"We are just finishing our South Africa Walking Safari with guides Wayne and Willem. I had a wonderful time with the most beautiful lodges and places and some awesome hikes. The highlight at the end as it should be - the climb up Sentinel to the top of Tugela Falls. Other highlights were the bush walk, seeing lion cubs, a white rhino and calf, other baby animals and lovely birds...."

Thank you Birgit!
