MAKE THE MOST OF WEEKEND BRUNCHES AT THIS BREEZY SPOT IN MULDERSDRIFT

The Terrace at Ground the Venue is a daytime restaurant that serves up elegant Meditteranean-inspired sharing plates. Go for brunch that spills into sundowners while you tuck into house-made Greek dips with their bread of the day, slow-roasted lamb, and a gamut of other gorgeously plated seafood, chicken and creative vegetable dishes.

They’re serious about curating a stylish and fuss-free space for grown-ups to kick back - the dress code is strictly smart casual and no kids under 12 and no dogs are allowed at the restaurant.

FRUIT PICKING SEASON STARTS THIS WEEKEND IN JOBURG SOUTH

Raspberry season is finally here, and The Field Berry Farm in Walkerville is now open every weekend until April for day outings with a difference. Their annual Raspberry Festival brings together fruit picking for all ages, food stalls where you can try raspberry ale and frozen yoghurt, and live music on selected days. Kids will be kept busy with the bicycle track and play area.

It’s loads of fun out in the fresh air and gives kids and grown-ups a bit more insight into where their food comes from. The farm is super popular and regularly books out, so book online before making the journey.

EASY ITALIAN-AMERICAN DINING AT FUGAZZI IN ROSEBANK

There’s no shortage of great Italian restaurants in Joburg covering the famous cuisine pockets of the country. Fugazzi in Rosebank instead looked towards North America for inspo and built their food offering specifically around the Italian-American way.

Chef Marc Robert developed an unfussy and affordable menu that includes big hits such as chicken parmigiana, pork belly mac and cheese, veal limone, and a host of seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes. And in true New York style, his pizza is crispy, thin, and foldable made with a proofed sourdough base.

It’s clever cooking that doesn’t need to be analysed or explained.

Top it all off with wine (try the local Italian-driven wines from Idiom and Terra del Capo) or a shortlist of cheeky signature cocktails, mocktails and apertivos.

Interiors are highlighted by cosy booths and cafe seating decorated with a funky mid-century aesthethic or head to the small terrace space where you can soak up all the walkway buzz at The Zone.

A BEAUTIFULLY FRAMED GLIMPSE OF JOBURG’S OLDEST MOSQUE

The Juma’ah Masjid (known as the Kerk Street Mosque) is Joburg’s oldest mosque and has been at the centre of the Muslim community for more than a century. There have been three iterations of the mosque on the same site. The original building was a wood and iron structure in 1906 before a foundation stone was laid for a two-storey mosque in 1918.

By the late 80s, the place of worship was once again demolished to make way for a much larger space completed in 1991. Today the mosque is still active and usually filled with people from the surrounding area and local businessmen who say their prayers.

📸 framed this multi-layered shot capturing the massive arches at FNB’s Bank City, the towering mosque, and a picture-perfect blue sky.

South Africa lost one of its brightest talents with the recent passing of acclaimed choreographer and dancer, Dada Masilo. The Soweto-born creative journeyed into dance at age 11 and completed her formal education at the National School of the Arts in Braamfontein as well as various types of training in the US and Europe.

In an interview with writer Mary Corrigal in 2016, she mentioned: “If I had stayed in Europe, I would never have made the kind of work I make because it is so safe there and everyone is calm. I want to make work with an edge.” (This interview was published in its entirety in the publication P.A.R.T.S. 20 Years, 50 Portraits).

We were privileged to see the staging of her production of Salome for Joburg Ballet’s Scarcity in October 2024, which also marked the company’s first full production in Cape Town and Dada’s final stage appearance. “I have kept the religious aspect in the background, to focus rather on the toxic relationships depicted in the piece,” Masilo explained in an interview with Theatre Scene Cape Town. “It is very dark: evil is omnipresent and scary, not just in Salomé’s fixation with the object of her desire, but also in the games Herod plays; it makes one’s flesh crawl.”

“Deeply respectful of European and contemporary music traditions, but unafraid to go bare on stage and voice her own opinions, she effectively changed the shape and appearance of contemporary dance in South Africa,” said family spokesperson Bridget van Oerle said in the statement, announcing her death.

Over the years, Masilo received numerous awards and nominations including the Premio Positano Léonide Massine Lifetime Achievement Award for innovative artistry in dance in Italy.

DRUMROLL FOR JOBURG’S BUZZIEST EVENT IN 2024!

A lot of really memorable events and festivals captured Joburgers’ attention last year, but the Red Bull Showrun, which took place in central Sandton on 6 October 2024, was an epic moment (and our most-read feature on website and social media!).

The event generally runs in major cities across the globe allowing audiences who may not typically have access to live races a chance to experience the sport’s magic firsthand.

Over 25,000 people gathered in Katherine Street to watch British racer David Coulthard and global Red Bull motorsport athletes show off their speed skills. Fans also got to experience the return of a Formula 1 car to Joburg with its engine that produces 750 horsepower and can reach up to 18,000 RPM.

Local spinners Samkeliso “Sam Sam” Thubane, Vaatjie and Katjia wowed the crowds with their tyre-burning antics. “It was amazing to see the South African motorsports fans come out and enjoy all the different vehicle styles and drivers,” said Sam Sam. “Also, for me to be on the same ‘track’ and stage as David Coulthard was amazing. We put on a good show!”
