🇲🇺Today, we honour Mauritius Abolition of Slavery Day! On February 1, 1835, the Mauritian nation made history as the last British colony to abolish slavery. This pivotal moment not only acknowledged the dignity of free labour but also highlighted ongoing struggles even after abolition. The Bank of England compensated planters for lost slaves while slavery-like conditions lingered in our society. But let’s celebrate the courageous descendants who found refuge at Le Morne mountain, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008—a symbol of resistance and strength! ✊🏽

There is so much to do in Mauritius for families!
🦒 Casela Nature Park is home to over 1800 animals and you can go zip-lining, ride a summer luge and even jump off a 45-metre platform into a canyon on a swing.
🦈 Odysseo Oceanarium in Port Louis focuses on conservation, education and fun! See over 300 different species of marine life, including sharks and stingrays.
🏝️ Visit Île aux Aigrettes, a small islet nature reserve, and take a walking eco-tour with one of the rangers. Keep a lookout for rare plants, reptiles, tortoises and beautiful birds.
🌄 Le Pouce Mountain is an 812-metre climb up into the clouds. Named for its thumb shape, this is the hardest of Mauritius’ family-friendly hikes but the view is spectacular!
🏖️ Then there are the beaches. Let the kids run along the soft sand and kick the surf. The smiles on their faces will make the journey to Mauritius worth it!

The International Kreol Festival in Grand Baie celebrated the essence of Mauritian cuisine alongside a beach concert on December 15. Following events at Le Morne and Trou d'Eau Douce, the festival aimed to attract a broader audience by highlighting popular Mauritian cuisine as a reflection of its diverse and vibrant culture.
This culinary showcase serves as an excellent opportunity to explore Mauritius through its flavors, reminiscent of notable culinary experiences. The festival highlighted the significance of sharing meals, particularly as social connections are often forged over food. Tourists flocked to savor local delights, from fried mine to fish vindaye, paired with refreshing drinks like tamarind juice and cane juice. Rather than a formal celebration, this Culinary Festival invited guests to indulge in the pleasures of Mauritian gastronomy, fostering connections between locals and visitors. Popular dishes like ‘briani’ and steamed dumplings have become part of the local
lexicon, illustrating the fusion of cultures on the island.

The International Kreol Festival kicks off in Le Morne:
Mauritianism as an offering.

At the foot of the Great Pyramid of Egypt, Napoleon Bonaparte took the measure of time and humility. It would not be wrong to say that Navin Ramgoolam, the Prime Minister, and Paul Bérenger, his deputy, having both visited the summit of the Morne mountain, were able to contemplate Creolité in all its splendour.

It was in fact in this symbolic place, at the foot of this mountain listed as a World Heritage Site, that the communion between a people and those who chart its destiny took place yesterday.

With two ministers conducting the orchestra, Richard Duval for Tourism and Mahen Gondeea for Culture, one could only shudder at the sound of the words that testified to the Creole richness of this island. Créolité, boté nou morisianism’, a theme that makes perfect sense, as Zanzak Arjoon, griot for the evening and philosopher of a mixed-race festival, points out.
