Airbnb is finally unbanned in South Africa - and super-clean local listings will now be highlighted

Government finally lifted its ban on Airbnb hosting in South Africa on Monday – two months after other accommodation establishments were allowed to operate.

Like hotels and guest houses, Airbnb had to close its operations at the start of the lockdown on March 27th. But by mid-June, when other establishments were allowed to host business travellers – and later leisure guests - it continued to be banned by government, by name.

Two months after hotels and guest houses were allowed to operate again, Airbnb establishments have finally been permitted to host guests again.

The best budget breakaways in your province for around R500 per person per night

Hotels and guest houses can now also host leisure travellers from within their own province.

In other words, provided you don’t cross a provincial boundary, you now have government’s blessing to take some time out from housebound lockdowns. And some hotels and lodges are coming to the party with good deals and new Covid-19 precautions.

But money is tight all around, so we went looking for true budget breakaways, at under R500 per person per night.

SA's national parks open for stayovers from next week

South African National Parks (SANParks) announced that accommodation at the majority of its parks will reopen from August 14th.

However, you are only allowed to visit a park in your resident province. "Interprovincial visitors will be prohibited entry into the parks," according to a SANParks statement.

Overnight guests will be required to provide proof of residence (municipal account or similar legally accepted form of verification of primary residence) at the time of booking accommodation and again when checking in, SANParks said. “No more than two people will be allowed per accommodation unit except for parents and children).”

10 of South Africa’s most beautiful spots to stargaze – including a quiver tree forest and dark-sky reserve

It isn’t always easy to appreciate the full beauty of the night sky, with light and air pollution making things hazy. Luckily for South Africans, many people are relatively short drives away from spectacular spots free of the smog and light, and where clear nights can provide breathtaking star scapes, from the Kruger Park to the Cederberg mountains.

Our clear skies also are one of the reasons why we have attracted scientists to building the likes of the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), the largest single optical telescope in the southern hemisphere, and MeerKAT which will eventually become part of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), the world’s largest radio telescope.

It’s official: you can stay in a hotel or resort for fun again – but not an Airbnb

It's official: under a change to lockdown regulations formally published late on Friday, you can sleep in some places other than your own home again, just for fun, as long as you don't cross a provicial boundary to get there.

The new rules add "persons utilizing such facilities for intra-provincial leisure purposes" to the list of permitted reasons for accommodation establishments to be open. But that only applies to a specified list of operations: "hotels, loges, bed and breakfasts, timeshare facilities and resorts and guest houses".

You’ll be able to go on a safari drive soon – but zoos and aquariums remain closed

New regulations, already approved by cabinet and due to be in force as soon as they are gazetted, will unlock whole areas of leisure, tourism minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane announced on Thursday.

"The impact of the pandemic has been devastating for the sector," said Kubayi-Ngubane in prepared remarks. "Many businesses are at risk and many jobs have already been lost. However, we are doing everything we can to ensure that the impact is minimised."

Emirates will pay for your medical costs and hotel quarantine if you catch Covid-19 while travelling

Emirates has a new strategy for boosting passenger demand in the midst of a global pandemic: coronavirus insurance. If one of its passengers is diagnosed with COVID-19 during their journey, the Dubai-based airline will cover their medical expenses, up to €150,000 (about R3 million). It will pay €100 (R1,900) per day for quarantine costs - such as a hotel room - for up to two weeks.

And if the worst happens, Emirates will offer €1,500 (about R29,000) for a passenger's funeral.

A pride of 20 lions recently made their way down to the Sand river in the Greater Kruger Park – and lined up perfectly to drink water.

The footage was captured by Nadav Ossendryver, founder and CEO of Latest Sightings, which shares videos captured by visitors to South Africa's game reserves.

Ossendryver says the spectacular moment was caught while on a filming trip to MalaMala Private Game Reserve in the Greater Kruger Park.

Foreign tourists may be allowed back by January, local leisure travel by end-September - report

In an interview on Wednesday, the deputy minister of tourism, Fish Mahlalela, said that foreign tourists may be allowed to travel to South Africa by the start of next year.

Mahlalela also told Southern & East African Tourism Update that domestic level travel was likely to open in late September or early October.

“The virus is likely to flatten in September according to health experts. At this point in time, borders open for international travellers is likely to be January 2021,” Mahlalela told the publication.

The Free State plans ‘extreme measures’ to lure tourists

The Free State is planning "extreme measures" to lure tourists to the province – South Africa's second least visited – over the next 12 months.

The Free State Gambling, Liquor and Tourism Authority this week formally started to solicit proposals from advertising agencies to help put it on the map through destination marketing over the course of the year.

The targets are big, and the current situation grim, the request for proposals shows.

10 award-winning wildlife photos give a rare look at birds around the world

Bird-watching can be a blink-and-you-miss-it endeavor. The agile creatures can be difficult to spot in the wild, much less photograph clearly. But every year, the National Audubon Society awards the talented photographers who successfully capture birds in their natural habitats around the world.

The Audubon Photography Awards recognise photos in four different categories: Professional, Amateur, Youth, and Plants for Birds. There's also a Fisher Prize Winner named for Audubon's former creative director Kevin Fisher, as well as a Grand Prize Winner.

The Louvre just reopened for the first time in 4 months

Visiting the Mona Lisa before the coronavirus pandemic was a lot like seeing your favourite band in concert - unless you're really lucky and you plan it just right, you're mostly just watching the show through someone else's phone.

Normally, the Louvre sees 10 million visitors every year, per The New York Times. Of those visitors, 80% are there to see the Mona Lisa, the Louvre reported in 2019.

In the fall of 2019, the Mona Lisa's room was renovated to include lines for viewing the painting. Even then, visitors complained that there were too many people present to truly experience the painting, per a 2019 article from The Times.

Travel will become more luxurious after the Covid-19 pandemic, hotel and aviation experts predict

The future of travel post-coronavirus is going to be all about "hyper-personalisation," hotel and aviation experts say.

As much of the world tentatively begins to emerge from lockdown, many people are thinking about travelling for leisure once again.

And it turns out, vacations in a post-Covid-19 world could be even more luxurious than ever.

Speaking at a webinar on "The Traveller in 2020 and Beyond" hosted by Black Tomato, boutique hotel specialist Mr & Mrs Smith's Founder and Chief Creative Officer James Lohan and UK based private jet charter company PrivateFly CEO Adam Twidell both said they expect travel to become more personal.
