The African Wild Dog, also called the Painted Wolf, or Cape Hunting Dog, is a canine native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is the largest indigenous canine in Africa, and the only extant member of the genus Lycaon, which is distinguished from Canis by dentition highly specialised for a hypercarnivorous diet, and a lack of dewclaws. It is estimated that about 6,600 adults including 1,400 mature individuals live in 39 subpopulations that are all threatened by habitat fragmentation, human persecution and outbreaks of diseases. As the largest subpopulation probably consists of less than 250 individuals, the African wild dog is listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List since 1990.

The Greater Kudu is a woodland antelope found throughout eastern and southern Africa. Despite occupying such widespread territory, they are sparsely populated in most areas due to declining habitat, deforestation, and poaching. The Kudu is also depicted across the South African National Parks' branding. The Kudu in its natural habitat is a stately and majestic animal that presents itself with pride and elegance. The Kudu also has a strength belied by its demeanor. It is the only known animal that can jump up to three meters in height, spontaneously.

The Spotted Hyaena is a formidable predator in its' own right. Extemely social, they live and hunt in packs. Research has also shown that they hunt more than scavenge. This guy we saw very early morning near Satara Restcamp in the Kruger National Park. The pose is a bit unusual - very upright, but the backlighting on the fur just made for a great pic.

The Secretary Bird is one of South Africa's stranger birds. Actually a member of the vulture family, it can fly but spends most of its' time on the ground. Kruger National Park - Here is a shot of the Golden Orb-web Spider showing the amazing colours on her back. Behind her are the remains of prey - these are left in the web on purpose. The prey forms a pattern in the centre of the web - called a "stabilimentum" - and it is big enough so that birds can see it - and then do not fly through the web.
