On this day, 48 years ago, Maj. William Knight flew the North American X-15A-2 to the unofficial absolute world speed record of Mach 6.72 (4,520 mph) over Edwards AFB, California (October 3, 1967). To date, Knight’s speed remains the fastest anyone has ever flown an aircraft.
