Wits Citizenship and Community Outreach - WCCO

Wits Citizenship and Community Outreach - WCCO By reaching out to the communities around us, Wities hold in their hands the possibility to make our country new. Getting involved is really up to you.

WCCO provides Wits students with real-world experiences, and opportunities to enhance their learning and civic responsibility, while addressing community needs. Choose to work as a volunteer on campus or in your community or other communities. Work with institutions that care for children, youth, the disabled or the aged. Become involved in causes as diverse as environmental justice; sustainable d

evelopment, literacy, and rights advocacy for children, disabled persons or for animals. We encourage student volunteers to commit to at least two hours per week to their chosen cause, organization or activity. But even if academic and other student commitments limit the time you may have available, make time to reach out. This year WCCO is focusing on supporting better educational outcomes for learners in our communities. One of the most enduring contributions we can make- and one of the most rewarding for volunteers- is to help establish more tutoring initiatives at Gauteng high schools and reading clubs at primary schools and early childhood development centres. Your contribution could include tutoring, mentoring, establishing, organizing events, fundraising, clothes and food collections, cleaning, painting and awareness-raising.

After 1994 efforts were made to embed democracy. The focus was on policy and institution-building. What was missing was ensuring all South Africans were on board.

2019 KOMATI WOMEN LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME REPORT

In 2019, Wits Citizenship and Community Outreach (WCCO) in conjunction with Komati Foundation Women Development (KFWD) enrolled 42 students into the Komati Women Leadership Program (KWLP). In line with the ethos of KFWD, the leadership program seeks to empower young female residents of the University of Witwatersrand to lead themselves to achieve their full potential and to make a positive impact in their communities by responding to challenges and setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth in pursuit of their long-term goals. This objective is being achieved through 3 core activities:

 Leadership lab sessions: Interactive sessions facilitated by experienced facilitators drawn from different professional fields. The range of topics have included Passion and Perseverance; Academic Prowess/ Time management; The Power of Attitude; Stress management; Countdown to exam tips etc. The session currently takes place on Thursday evening 6.30-7.30 p.m. in Bohlaleng Block Tutorial room B 10 on Education campus, Wits University.
 Mentoring Sessions: Students are helped to set and achieve their personal goals and develop leadership skills through monthly mentoring sessions
 Social Impact: Students are exposed to opportunities to make a positive impact in the community by spending time with children in Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital, on Saturdays from 10.00-12.00 noon.

The program was launched in 2018 after a marketing of the program to residents of Wits Education Campus. Those who successfully underwent the 2018 program received certificates at the 2019 launch that took place on Education campus on the 21st of February. Both the 2018/2019 students, Komati Foundation officials and the mentors were present at the launch

Apart from the core activities, KWLP has also offered the Wits students auxiliary enriching experiences such as a tour to Soweto on Heritage day, excursion to Klipriviersberg and Suikerbosrand Nature Reserves and exposure to the Handel’s Messiah Concert at Mandela Square, a tour of Art galleries along Jan Smuts Avenue and acquaintance with the Art of Living Program, Alexandra, a project of KFWD.

KWLP continues to be passionate and dedicated to the mission of developing young women who will be the future leaders committed to self-development and social change for the betterment of their communities, with the collaboration of Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital and the Wits Citizenship and Community Outreach.
