When on safari, keep your eyes peeled as you never know what strange creatures may be around the next corner!

One such is the gerenuk, also known as the giraffe gazelle. This fascinating creature has a long neck, hence its name.

It is a medium-sized antelope, between 80 and 105cm tall, weighing between 18 and 52kg and found in parts of East Africa. Only males have 25–44 cm horns which are lyre-shaped curving backward then slightly forward.

24 10 02 Wildebbest crossing

When one pictures Africa, it’s usually images of the Serengeti that spring to mind. The months of December to May bring a new flush of life to the southern sections of the Serengeti National Park. These months bring the short rains and then the start of the long rains which bring a breath-taking vibrancy when 1.8 million wildebeest move through the Serengeti ecosystem and head back into the southern short grass plains forming enormous herds spanning kilometres. Between the months of February and March around 200,000 calves are born. This mass increase of young leads to an abundance in the food chain giving visitors a chance to see some spectacular wildlife action. Many predators also give birth during this time to capitalise on the increased food supply. The greener grasses encourage birds with a flush of insects, seeds and flowers, a stark comparison from the previous desperately dry months between August to November. When to go? Where to go?
