SUSPENSION OF PLETTENBERG BAY AIRPORT LICENSE

CemAir (Pty)Ltd confirms the suspension of the Plettenberg Bay Airport license by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) on 31 July 2024.

As a result of this decision CemAir has once again suspended all flights to and from Plettenberg Bay with immediate effect. Flights are currently suspended until 15 November 2024.

We received reassurances from Bitou Municipality that an agreement was reached with the SACAA regarding an action plan to resolve the outstanding maintenance issues at the airport. This information was inaccurate. We were again informed on short notice of anticipated closure of the Airport which on this occasion materialised.

At the time of writing no further information is available as to the potential resolution of the outstanding issues. A proposed meeting to discuss the way forward has been postponed multiple times. It is uncertain whether this meeting will take place.

We thank the travellers visiting Plettenberg Bay for their support over the last 10 years.

Existing tickets

Tickets on flights up to and including 15 November 2024 to and/or from Plettenberg Bay Airport have been cancelled. You will be contacted by a CemAir agent to provide you with rebooking options.

Should your ticket have been issued through a third-party agent, kindly make contact with your agent to assist with the above arrangements.

About Plettenberg Bay Airport

The Airport in Plettenberg is owned by Bitou Municipality which has been operating the facility since construction. The municipality recently entered into an agreement with RSA Aero relating to the long-term management of the Airport facility. The Airport management was in a process of transitioning between the parties. CemAir is not privy to the details of the Airport or its operation and we have received limited information on the process that was agreed.

The Airport was previously closed to commercial traffic in 2022 for a three-month period when the Airport license was downgraded by the SACAA for unaddressed non-compliances.

CemAir is South Africa’s second largest airline by number of flights, operating with bases in Johannesburg and Cape Town and flying to 14 destinations in South Africa and the region. The airline is an IATA member and holds interline and code share agreements with 10 carriers.

CemAir has operated a scheduled airline service into Plettenberg Bay from both Johannesburg and Cape Town since 2014
