Supermoon viewed from Afton!

A supermoon occurs when the full moon is at or near its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit, making it appear larger and brighter than a typical full moon. The term "supermoon" is not an official astronomical term but rather a popular term used to describe this phenomenon. Supermoons can appear about 14% larger and 30% brighter than when the moon is at its farthest point (apogee) in its orbit.

Afton Kudu Bar

About 15 years ago, a kudu was hunted in the Limpopo Province. To casually say, “a kudu was hunted” absolutely does this once-in-a-lifetime giant, an injustice. This was not tagged in a breeding camp. It was taken by a client with Eulalie Hunting. Social media was not huge at that time, so this accomplishment did not get much recognition, and given the specimen, it’s a shame.

I felt that the beast was too magnificent to be mounted and sent across the Atlantic only to be lost in one person’s trophy room where only a few could appreciate it. Fortunately, the Outfitter and client allowed me to arrange a replica of the horns on another cape. Not having Afton then, moving it from one spot to another, and with me not taking sufficient care of it, I am ashamed to say, the mount deteriorated. It got shabby, and when I took over Afton in 2017, it adorned the place for a few years, but I was never proud of its condition. This year it got a re-vamp. A new cape and Raymond and Hendrik, of Cradle of Man Taxidermy did a superb job. It is the main attraction now. As a comparison we also have an Eastern Cape sub-species on display, this one mounted by Timoland Taxidermy. I think this kudu is equally handsome and actually prefer the darker neck hair coloring. The horns are smaller, but they have equally well-shaped curls.
