Oxpeckers are small birds that live in symbiosis with large mammals like buffalo. They feed on ticks, fleas, and other parasites found on the animals, helping to reduce their hosts' parasite load. Oxpeckers also clean wounds by eating dead tissue, though they sometimes keep wounds open to feed on blood, which can be more harmful than helpful. Perched on buffalo, these birds enjoy a safe spot away from predators and an abundant food supply. In return, they act as an early warning system, alerting buffalo to potential threats by flying off noisily at the first sign of danger.

These pictures were taken recently during an afternoon out in the veld. We spotted a herd of buffalo and captured this stunning bull with oxpeckers perched on him—a truly breathtaking sight.

The name “aardvark” originates from a South African term that translates to “earth pig.” Despite its pig-like appearance, particularly in its body and snout, the aardvark is more closely related to elephants and golden moles. The Wildeklawer School Sports Tournament is held annually at Diamantveld High School in Kimberley, the largest school sports tournament in South Africa. Kimberley is the nearest major town to Wag ’n Bietjie and most of our areas in the Northern Cape. This year, St John's College from Hamilton, New Zealand, was invited to participate in the rugby matches at the tournament. They wanted to experience an African braai, and we gladly hosted them for the evening. A total group of 61 people, including 26 rugby players, joined us last night. It was a wonderful evening, and we thoroughly enjoyed having them all with us. Afterwards, they performed their haka to express gratitude for the evening. Best of luck with the rest of the tournament and your matches, boys!
