| The Knysna Story

Knysna, located along South Africa’s Garden Route, has a rich history dating back 90,000 years, with early footprints from hominids and the Khoikhoi and San peoples, who shaped the region’s culture. The name "Knysna" comes from the Khoikhoi word “Naizna,” meaning “ferns.”

European settlers arrived in 1760, and in 1804, George Rex, possibly the illegitimate son of King George III, founded Knysna. He helped establish the timber trade, which flourished despite early setbacks like the failed harbor attempt in 1817.

By 1881, Knysna officially became a town. Today, the region is famous for its towering forests, vibrant wildlife, and the Big Tree—an 800-year-old yellowwood. Knysna remains a must-visit destination for history and nature lovers alike.
