The Big 5 refers to the five animals that are the most dangerous to encounter on foot, and the most thrilling. What can really compare to an intimate Big 5 encounter? Going eye-to-eye with an adult elephant, discovering a leopard with a fresh kill in a tree, spending a morning on a misty plain surro...

They are magnificent animals & you may want to just cuddle them BUT if you do you are fueling the canned lion hunting industry. Also remember a wild animal is always a wild animal even in captivity so if it attacks you don't blame the animal

Happy Friday! Another long weekend lies ahead...

Did you know that during holidays the number of visitors to facilities that offer cub petting and walking with lions increases?

All of these activities could be contributing to the canned hunting, captive breeding and lion bone trade industries.

We urge everyone to not engage in any activities that involve interaction with wild animals. There are only a handful of authentic wildlife sanctuaries in South Africa and they do not BREED, TRADE or INTERACT with the animals in any way.

Do your research BEFORE you visit these facilities. Be sure to ask the following questions:

*Do they offer any activities based on animal and human interaction?
* If it claims to be a sanctuary, do they offer life-long care for the animals?
* Are they trading in animals?
* Where did all the animals come from and where do some of them go?
* Who is their recognized predator ecologist or scientist?
* Have any of their animals been released into the wild? And if so, where and when?

Before going as a visitor, check the social media sites and blogs for comments and feedback on the particular farm or facility.

Have a wonderful weekend.

This week we were thrilled to receive a two day visit from the amazing ladies on the Elephant Ignite Expedition 2016 who have driven 14,000km from Durban, South Africa to Kenya via 10 countries and multiple elephant conservation projects! We loved showing them around the Research Center and the two beehive fences that they have sponsored through their fundraising efforts. In particular they have been focusing on "Women in Conservation" so they were happy to see that our team at Elephants and Bees is also 80% women! We so enjoyed their visit and wish them luck with finishing their 100 day expedition.
