Tracks Cast in Stone.
Dr Charles Helm entertained us last night with his talk of some ancient discoveries over the last few decades along our very own coastline.

Numerous Pleistocene (Geologic period of approximately 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago) vertebrate tracksites have been identified on aeolianite (Pertaining to wind activity in the study of geology and weather and specifically to the wind's ability to shape the surface of the Earth) palaeosurfaces (Palaeosurfaces is an area where geologists and geomorphologists can combine their expertise to provide a more holistic treatment of the processes that helped shape the face of the Earth) in the Garden Route National Park, West Coast National Park, and Addo Elephant National Park. In the Garden Route National Park alone, 57 Pleistocene vertebrate tracksites have been discovered. An equilibrium exists, whereby new sites become exposed through cliff-collapse events, while known sites slump into the ocean, are eroded through the action of wind and water, or are destroyed through wave action. Engraved graffiti poses a further threat. These sites complement the traditional body fossil record and have significant palaeoenvironmental and palaeoanthropological implications. Hominin sites are of global importance: one contains the oldest tracks attributed to Homo sapiens, others contain patterns made in sand by ancestral humans and constitutes a form of early palaeoart Collectively, these sites have substantial geoheritage value.

The recent upwelling of the ocean has almost forced some of our marinelife to move in closer inshore. Upwelling is a process that occurs when cold, nutrient-rich water from deep in the ocean rises to the surface. It's caused by wind blowing along the coast, which pushes surface water away, forcing some of its travellers that move with the currents to come in closer to
shore, and is also the reason why we find some marinelife wash up on shores , i.e., turtles, fish, sharks etc 🐢

3 March 2025 is World Wildlife Day, and we can't think of a better way to celebrate this day by sharing the important contributions that whales have on the planet.
Whales play an important role on the planet as they capture carbon from the atmosphere, support ocean food chains, and increase phytoplankton production.
We have the pleasure of observing them and the honour of sharing their space.

The United Nations World Wildlife Day (WWD) is celebrated every year on 3 March to celebrate wild animals and plants. Every year, they recognize the unique roles and contributions of wildlife to people and the planet.

What is a breach?
This is when a humpback whale propels itself out of the water with such force it almost looks like they are flying. Sometimes, they add a spin, and then land on the surface of the water with a huge splash.
🐋 full breach is when more than half of the whale's body breaks the surface
🐋 A half breach is when less than half of the whale's body breaks the surface
🐋 A chin-slap breach is when the whale lands on its throat or belly
🐋 A tail breach is when the whale propels its tail and lower body out of the water.
Does anyone know what kind of force this requires?

It's still Humpback Whale Awareness Month, and today, we are talking about communication among Humpback Whales. 🐋

1st of all, you have to know that sound travels four times faster in water than on land. That means that sounds can be heard for kms, and it's crystal clear underwater. The ocean is a dence quiet environment, and any disruptions will be noted by other creatures.
Underwater communication: Song
Male humpback whales sing for hours, repeating a song that's about 10 minutes long.
Other whales can hear these songs from many miles away.

Surface language:
Humpback whales use breaches, tail slaps, and pec slaps to communicate.
These behaviours can be social interactions, letting other whales know that they are in the surrounding area or an expression of dominance used to deter other whales.
These are the behaviours that we mostly experience on our whale trips.
