As a wildlife photographer and safari guide here in the Kruger National Park, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing countless incredible moments. This shot of a leopard growling at an approaching hyena is one of those moments.Being able to read those little signs, knowing what the animals are likely to do next—that’s what helped me capture this moment. Wildlife photography is as much about understanding the creatures you’re photographing as it is about having the right equipment. When you know how animals move, behave, and react, you can anticipate what’s going to happen next, but getting the perfect shot goes beyond just knowing the animals. It’s about being patient and waiting for the right moment. Sometimes that means sitting in one spot for hours, simply watching, learning, and waiting for the wildlife to reveal itself. But once you’ve learned to read the scene, once you can feel when something is about to happen, it all clicks. For me wildlife photography is all about capturing the stories that play out every day in nature, moments that might go unnoticed by many but are full of emotion, power, and drama. And to truly capture these moments, I have to be in tune with the wildlife and the environment. I have to be patient, observant, and always ready for the unexpected.
