Exciting developments are underway at the Cape Agulhas Lighthouse Precinct! 🏗️ The ongoing Phase 2 project aims to enhance visitor experiences by introducing:

🍽️ A new restaurant
🏛️ An interpretation centre featuring vendor stalls, a booking office, and a lecture theatre
🛍️ Curio shops
🚻 Modern ablution facilities
🏢 Reception areas and offices

This initiative not only promises to enrich our coastal landmark but has also created employment opportunities for 77 individuals, including 48 youth and 50 women, with contributions from eight local subcontractors. ​

While initial projections aimed for completion by June 2024, unforeseen delays have extended the timeline. The current completion date remains unconfirmed.

Today, I had the pleasure of visiting the Hangnes Outspan, a historic site near Cape Agulhas, where an old water trough stands as a testament to our region's rich agricultural heritage. This trough, fed by a nearby spring, once provided essential water to the Merino sheep from the van Breda family's "Zoetendals Vallei" farm during their seasonal grazing periods. Travelers and holidaymakers en route to L'Agulhas also paused here, allowing their livestock to drink and rest at this vital stopover.

The Hangnes Outspan is a cherished reminder of our community's past, reflecting the enduring relationship between our people, their livestock, and the land.
