History: The Xhosa people have a long history in Southern Africa. They are believed to have migrated to their current homeland from the north during the 16th and 17th centuries. The Xhosa kingdom was established by Chief Tshawe in the early 19th century, and subsequent leaders such as Chief Hintsa and Chief Sandile played significant roles in Xhosa history during the colonial period.

Language: The Xhosa people speak isiXhosa, a Bantu language that belongs to the Nguni subgroup of languages. It is one of the official languages of South Africa and is widely spoken in the Eastern Cape. Nelson Mandela, the first democratically elected president of South Africa, was a native Xhosa speaker.

Traditional Beliefs: The Xhosa people traditionally followed a combination of animism and ancestor worship. They believed in a supreme being called Qamata, who was responsible for creating and controlling the world. Ancestors were highly revered, and rituals and ceremonies were performed to honor and communicate with them.

Music and Dance: The Xhosa people have a rich musical heritage. Traditional Xhosa music involves vocal harmonies and rhythmic clapping, with songs often accompanied by indigenous instruments like the "umrhube," a mouthbow, or the "uhadi," a musical bow. Dance is an integral part of Xhosa culture, and various dance styles are performed during celebrations and ceremonies.

Role of Women: Xhosa society is matrilineal, meaning descent is traced through the female line. Women play significant roles within the community and are responsible for maintaining the household and passing down cultural traditions to the next generation. Women also participate in public life and can hold leadership positions.

Arts and Crafts: Xhosa artisans are known for their craftsmanship. Beadwork, pottery, weaving, and woodcarving are common artistic expressions within the community. Beadwork, in particular, holds cultural significance and is used to communicate messages, represent social status, and enhance traditional attire.

🌟Yesterday was a day filled with culture and education as CHOSI TOURS took a group of lucky adventurers on a free trip to the Iziko Museum of South Africa, Iziko Slave Lodge, and Iziko Planetarium and Museum!🚀

🎉This amazing event was part of the museum's Freedom Day celebrations and was fully funded and curated by the museum itself! We're so grateful to Dr Wandile Kasibe for believing in our idea and allowing us to make this happen!🙌

💫We explored the depths of history, art, and science together, and it was an experience that we'll never forget! Thanks to everyone who joined us on this incredible journey and to the Iziko Museum of South Africa for making it possible!🌍

AMANONO - CHILD SPIRIT

Child spirits are a significant part of the spiritual beliefs in many African cultures. These spirits are believed to be the souls of children who have died at a young age, such as stillborn infants or children who passed away before reaching maturity. In some traditions, child spirits are also believed to be responsible for the birth and protection of newborn babies, as well as the guardians of fertility and childbirth.

In many African cultures, child spirits are thought to possess special powers and abilities, such as the ability to heal, bring good luck, and protect their families. Some cultures believe that these spirits have the ability to communicate with the living, and can offer guidance and wisdom to those who seek it.

However, child spirits are also believed to be mischievous and can cause trouble if they are not appeased or treated with respect. In some traditions, it is believed that these spirits may cause illness, bad luck or misfortune if they feel neglected or offended. As a result, many African cultures have specific rituals and ceremonies designed to appease child spirits and honor their memory.

Pondoland, also known as the Transkei region, is a region located on the Eastern Cape coast of South Africa. Historically, it was home to several indigenous tribes, including the Xhosa people. In general terms, being a cultural ambassador means be oning a symbol for your country and culture. Their role is to identify and explore further issues of culture, behaviour, where staff may be treated less favorable, potential discrimination and unconscious or conscious cultural bias. All of which could be present, observed and ignored during informal or formal processes. The CAs role is to be curious about these issues, make them transparent and create dialogue to establish the potential impact on the outcome. .
