Hand-caught cold-smoked tuna, on homemade sourdough baguette, with fresh coriander, fresh lime, wasabi and homemade anchovies-mayonnaise.. One of the amazing tricks our chefs pull out of their chefs-hats! We always strive for homemade, locally sourced and sustainable products, and love what our passionate chefs can do in the bush!!

The largest of all of her kind, the Leatherback turtle, can weigh over 800 kg. Instead of the usual hard scutes, Leatherback is covered with thick, smooth skin like vulcanised rubber. They are the only living reptiles that are warm-blooded, generating their own heat.

Adult Leatherback feed only on jellyfish, but the juveniles may also eat other floating organisms. They dive to feed and are able to reach depths of over 350 meters.
Males never leave the water once they enter as hatchlings. Females return to the same beach on which they were hatched. They emerge, move above the high water mark and find suitable site to lay eggs. A miraculous ritual not to be missed. This happens during what we call a Turtle Season in iSimangaliso. That time is now!

Maryke Bezuidenhout from Manguzi hospital is a force of nature and especially in terms of helping those in need from her community.

She started the Manguzi Gajima event a few years back and it has grown to be an epic day of dress up, obstacle courses for the wheel chair bound, singing and general fun to those underprivileged and special needs humans in this rural KZN town.

Thonga trails were proud to contribute towards the day and hope to make this an annual contribution to Maryke and her team and to the communities we work and live amongst. Feel free to get in touch if you would like to contribute to next years event and we can make it happen. Thank you Maryke!

At Thonga Trails we have skin in the game.

It was MPA day yesterday, as a founding member of TT I genuinely want to see change in the next generation of local conservationists, we need local leaders.

What better way to start than to introduce these grade 5 students from local Sodwana Bay primary school to the beach and rock pools.

We did a little beach clean up before a good old swim in the bay while the bottlenose dolphins came for a turn and the Humpback whales were breaching on the horizon.

It was such a fun morning, and the kids loved it and were inspired to keep growing this educational side of Thonga Trails!

I think Damien has finally outdone himself! Where does he go from here?

Fresh homemade Tagliatelle with Langoustine Bisque under a full moon and starry skies, paired with your choice of white wine.

Mad skills and incredible food in the most peaceful and rustic of settings.

Cheers Damo!
