At Thonga Trails we have skin in the game.
It was MPA day yesterday, as a founding member of TT I genuinely want to see change in the next generation of local conservationists, we need local leaders.
What better way to start than to introduce these grade 5 students from local Sodwana Bay primary school to the beach and rock pools.
We did a little beach clean up before a good old swim in the bay while the bottlenose dolphins came for a turn and the Humpback whales were breaching on the horizon.
It was such a fun morning, and the kids loved it and were inspired to keep growing this educational side of Thonga Trails!

Our balmy Zululand winters are the mildest in the country and it’s an amazing time of year to be walking on this coastline. The ocean temperature is still 23C and the air temperature at night sits around 17C with day time in the lower to mid 20’s.
July is fully booked already, and these slots don’t often make themselves available at such short notice, so get in touch now to scoop them up!
Perfect opportunity for 2 couples or 4 mates to come along if you can’t get a whole trail together!

Enjoying the beautiful Kosi Bay Lakes after some snorkeling with a refreshing drink! What an amazing summer it has been and we’ve been so lucky with all the turtle and hatchling sightings! What a great start of 2024 we’ve had and here’s to many memorable trails this year! Walking this stunning coastline, seeing Loggerhead Turtles nest, exploring the forests, spotting Palmnut Vultures, snorkeling the pristine reefs and enjoying amazing food.. We kicked off the year doing exactly thát with our ‘open trail’ and saw a bunch of strangers become friends! What a turtle season it’s been so far! On our trail this weekend we spotted another 5 Loggerhead Turtles going onto the beach to lay their eggs! We’ve also come across the first hatchling tracks already. Excited to see what the next few weeks still have in store for us during the turtle walks!!

We’ve been blessed with an amazing turtle season so far! It’s so special to witness these giants as they head to the beach and back to lay their eggs. Like this , what a way to end off 2023! We've had such an incredible year refining our product into something we're really proud of! After guiding our guests through the astoundingly diverse area of coastal bush, fresh water lake systems, virgin beaches and temperate Ocean, they have all left as friends! Mermaids and dolphin swims are just some of the endless possibilities that exist when on our Thonga Trails. Our last day we end doing an ocean safari in the pristine waters of Maputaland. As with any safari “expect the unexpected” . Sometimes dolphins swim curiously up to the boat to interact with us . The mermaid in the video is actually Dr Jess Williams Jess Williams a turtle expert enjoying some reconnect dolphin time. Thonga Trails
This annual phenomenon happens from mid October till about mid February. The Loggerhead turtles come ashore to deposit their eggs generally at night but now and again, we see them during the early evening. Using local registered guides on day 2 , we go for a nocturnal walk along the Sandy beaches of Bhanga Nek looking for the mamas depositing their eggs into the nesting cavity.
