Would you?👀
Recently our volunteers were lucky enough to SCUBA dive at night! This is not very common in Sodwana Bay because of launching the boat through the surf, the conditions need to be just right. 🌊
We drop when the sun is just setting and experience the light fade until it is completely dark. The highlight from this adventure was turning all our torches off to witness the bioluminescent plankton sparkle in the water like stars in the sky. 🌌 It was truly breathtaking!

Are you gonna match our freak?👀
Here at Deep Blue we collect data on nudibranchs! If we see one on a dive, we take a photograph of it and later identify what species it is. All nudibranchs seen go into a massive database to keep record of all species seen at what times of the year and at which dive sites. We then use these data to help establish nudibranchs as key species of climate change and reef🪸

Humpback whales are known for their remarkable migrations, which are among the longest of any mammal species. Here in Sodwana Bay, South Africa, we are lucky enough to witness this incredible journey!🐋The warmer waters of Sodwana Bay provide a safer environment for humpback whales to give birth and raise their calves. These waters offer fewer predators and more favourable conditions for the newborn babies. We can often spot these majestic creatures performing their characteristic breaches, tail slaps, and other behaviors! The migration of humpback whales to Sodwana Bay is a vital part of their life cycle. Conservation efforts in our area focus on protecting the whales and their habitat.🪸Keep an eye on our page for updates on sightings or book with us between now and November to witness this amazing spectacle!🤙🏼#humpbackwhales #marineconservation #volunteerabroad #scubadiving #solotravel #seetheworld
Our oceans are currently facing the fourth Global Bleaching Event! The first took place in 1998, where 20% of the world’s reefs suffered bleaching-level heat stress. In 2010, the second resulted in 35%. And finally the third spanned 2014 to 2017 and affected 56%. With increasing numbers during consecutive events, the current consequences are daunting.💔This is a global crisis! Coral reefs sustain an incredible amount of marine life, whose very existence relies on healthy reef ecosystems.🪸 Without reefs the whole marine environment is vulnerable to collapsing. Although the thought of this is heartbreaking, this World Ocean Day we are feeling extremely grateful. We get to experience reefs that are still thriving in the face of adversity. Our little hidden gem is a beacon of hope that there is still a future for this integral part of our oceans!🌊#WorldOceanDay #marineconservation #volunteerabroad #scubadiving #solotravel #seetheworld
