African Scops Owl | Skopsuil

These little beauties are quite common in the rest camps and picnic sites in the Kruger National Park. They are often overlooked because of their exceptional camouflage.

Wow what a bird we found yesterday on our birding day trip!! A White-Breasted Cuckooshrike!

Not only is this a very difficult bird to see in South Africa and is usually found in well developed tall mopane woodlands where they normally forage quite high up in the vegetation.
We were extremely lucky when we spotted this guy well out of range in the South of the Kruger National Park, close to Skukuza. If I say lucky, I mean it! We were driving along the s22, about a 100 meters from the s114, where I was chatting to my birding guests when something “out of place” looking caught my eye, we were on our way to a lion kill and for a second, I almost drove on!! Luckily my curiosity got the better off me and I decided to reverse and double check… I couldn’t believe what I was seeing!!
Luckily he was very obliging and I managed to get a few good shots of him before he decided to fly deeper in and disappeared.
This was a Lifer for me and all my guests and I was thrilled that I could share this special sighting with them!

One thing is for sure… when something looks odd or doesn’t seem right, its definitely worth stopping and checking it out!

There is a definite range expansion for this species as it used to be confined mostly to the north of the park, however we now have frequent sightings of them in the far south of the park.

African Pygmy Goose | Dwerggans

An uncommon bird in the Kruger National Park. There is a pair that frequent Leeupan in the summer months if the conditions are right and if there are plenty of water lilly’s at the pan.

Thank you Ian for an incredible outing!!

Gaboon Adders are not a common sight, normally very well camouflaged in the leaf litter of dense forested areas, however this one was resting in a very open area!

A common spurfowl in the Kruger National Park. They also love to sit up on a perch and announce their presence, which in turn offers fantastic photo opportunities!

On a recent birding day trip with Kruger Park Birding Tours, we had the pleasure to watch this Fork-tailed Drongo repeatedly dive bomb this beautiful Lizzard Buzzard. Eventually the Drongo succeeded and the Buzzard took off into some thickets.

We went for a short visit at Marievale Bird Sanctuary near Nigel the other day! What an amazing place!! Soooo many birds! We spend about 3 hours there and racked up just under 90 species! There are photographic hides all over the place and we wish we had more time to spend in them! All in all, its a wonderful place and a must visit for any birder!! So why not include a visit here when coming to kruger for a birding tour with us?? Here are a few snaps of the day…

A great comparison of Yellow-billed Oxpeckers and a Red-billed Oxpecker.
The YBO are now quite common in the South of the park, compared to just a few years ago when they were still a rarity! I remember a few years ago when I reported a YBO on a Giraffe in the Lower Sabie region and I got feedback that, that was the first sighting of them in that region. What a success story for this bird that was once almost completely locally extinct in the Kruger National Park due to pesticides that were used to dip cattle to get rid of ticks.

Dusky Lark | Donkerlewerik

These beauties are often seen moving around shrugging their wings and this could possibly be a way to flush insects. Interestingly the Ground-scraper Thrush not only looks very similar but also shrugs its wings like the Dusky Lark. The Dusky Lark has quite long legs with a whitish/ light grey colour to them. The chest is boldly spotted with a dark back which is often quite scaly.

Broad-billed Roller | Geelbektroupant

This year seems to be a good year for these rollers in the southern part of the park. We have seen way more breeding pairs than usual! Could be due to the fact that we had an abnormally wet winter!
