Wow what a bird we found yesterday on our birding day trip!! A White-Breasted Cuckooshrike!
Not only is this a very difficult bird to see in South Africa and is usually found in well developed tall mopane woodlands where they normally forage quite high up in the vegetation.
We were extremely lucky when we spotted this guy well out of range in the South of the Kruger National Park, close to Skukuza. If I say lucky, I mean it! We were driving along the s22, about a 100 meters from the s114, where I was chatting to my birding guests when something “out of place” looking caught my eye, we were on our way to a lion kill and for a second, I almost drove on!! Luckily my curiosity got the better off me and I decided to reverse and double check… I couldn’t believe what I was seeing!!
Luckily he was very obliging and I managed to get a few good shots of him before he decided to fly deeper in and disappeared.
This was a Lifer for me and all my guests and I was thrilled that I could share this special sighting with them!
One thing is for sure… when something looks odd or doesn’t seem right, its definitely worth stopping and checking it out!
