Water is life... we bathe in it, cook with it, drink it, and water our crops with it. The only way to ensure your water is clean and safe is to have it tested.

We recommend testing drinking water at least once a year. Ground water can change over time, and you want to make certain you’re removing any bacteria or other contaminants. Annual testing ensures your water treatment system is working properly. Just because your water is clear and tastes good, doesn’t mean it’s safe to drink. The only way to ensure it’s free of harmful bacteria and contaminants is to have your water tested regularly.

For many agricultural accreditations, and water regulations, it is required that you test your water more frequently.

Labserve offers the following standard water analyses for the agricultural sector, municipalities, and the hospitality industry:
• Potable (Drinking) Water
• Irrigation Water
• Bottling Water
• Effluent (Waste) Water
• E-coli and Total Coliforms
• GlobalG.A.P. Water
• Farming for the Future Water
• Fish Water Analysis
• Pesticide Levels in Water

Easy-to-Follow Guide to General Soil Sampling

Collecting soil samples seems simple, but the laboratory results rely on the quality of the sample that you provide for testing.

Gather your tools:
• Clean plastic bucket.
• Shovel, spade, or auger.
• Clean plastic bags.
• Permanent marker for labelling.

How to collect soil samples:
• Remove the top layer of organic matter or soil crust.
• Use a shovel, spade, or auger.
• Sampling depth varies depending on your needs, generally soil samples are taken to 30 cm depth.
• Collect enough sub-samples from each area to compile a representative composite sample.
• Combine all the sub-samples from one area in a clean plastic bucket.
• Remove debris like rocks (leave small stones), roots, or leaves.
• Mix thoroughly to create a uniform composite sample.
• Transfer approximately 1 kg of mixed soil into a clean plastic bag.
• Label the sample to match your records with details such as area name, date, and depth.
• Send the soil samples to a Labserve branch as soon as possible.
• Avoid sampling when soil is extremely wet.
• Clean tools between areas to prevent cross-contamination.

By following these simple steps, you'll ensure reliable soil analysis results. Annual soil sampling is essential for annual crops and preferred for perennials. Be forewarned of nutrient deficiencies, optimise your fertiliser use, improve crop yields and profitability.

It’s back to business today as Labserve opens its doors for 2025. We wish all our clients a happy and prosperous year ahead!

Here are some fun facts about New Years:
• The earliest recorded festivities in honour of a new year's arrival date back some 4,000 years to ancient Babylon.
• Julius Caesar, the emperor of Rome, was the first to declare Jan. 1 a national holiday in 46 BCE, establishing January 1 as the first day of the year. January was named after Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, endings, and transitions, symbolising reflection on the past and planning for the future.
• Champagne production skyrocketed from 300,000 to 20 million bottles per year between 1800 and 1850, as the world started ordering more for ship christenings and New Year's celebrations.
• Kissing someone at midnight is said to come from the idea that doing so will prevent loneliness during the coming year and ward off evil spirits.
• The island nation Kiribati in the Central Pacific is the first location to ring in the New Year each year.
• American Samoa is the second to last place to celebrate the new year behind Baker and Howland Islands, which are both uninhabited.
• The most common resolutions people make are to get healthier, lose weight or save money.
• Each year, it is estimated that 80 percent of New Year's resolutions are abandoned by February.
• Celebrating the first baby of the New Year has been a symbol of the holiday since around 600 B.C.
• In some Latin American countries, people carefully pick the underwear they wear for the holiday. Yellow enhances your chances for abundance and money. Red means you'll likely find love. And if you were sporting white underpants, preferably new and clean, then peace was your top priority for the coming year.
• The iconic Times Square ball drop in New York City began in 1907 as a response to a ban on fireworks.

Rather than swimming, they opt for a leisurely gallop along the riverbed floor. Remarkably, hippos can snooze underwater effortlessly, thanks to a built-in reflex that allows them to bob up, take a breath, and sink back down without waking.
