If you remember, or want to know about, 80’s South Africa and how young people danced from the total onslaught to democracy, join DJ, host and story-teller extraordinaire, Sean Brokensha as he takes us down memory lane using music – and its backstories – to recount those awful, yet wonderful days that took us into the rainbow nation.

About Sean: he has worked in radio, television and live entertainment since the mid 80’s. He has written, produced, and directed media broadcast on DSTV, BBC, SABC and eTV. On Saturdays and Sundays, between 4 and 7pm, he hosts his eponymous show, Sean Brokensha’s Musicguru Mix, on MixFM (available via the MixFM app or DSTV audio channel 823).

If you’re a child (or child-at-heart-adult) of 80’s South Africa, you don’t want to miss this show: the soundtrack from the mid-80’s and into the 90’s, interwoven with the stories of the music and musicians, and how young South Africans danced from the total onslaught to democracy.

PS
1. If you have already booked: thank you. Sarel will be sending you a Yoco payment link in due course
2. For those asking if the show is suitable for teens: yes, bearing in mind that it will be both an education (about the time and place) and a party

Curious about the genesis of the Eish! It’s the 80’s shindig taking place at Green Gables on 23 September?

Over a tipple or two, a bunch of McGregorites – some ex-Joburgers, some who passed through Jozi at the right time – discovered that we jolled at the same live music spots (Jameson’s on Commissioner Street, we’re looking at you!). We also discovered that we spend many Sunday afternoons the same way – listening to Sean Brokensha’s Music Guru show on Mix FM. No “talking head”, Sean is a skilled storyteller with prodigious music knowledge.

Then a harebrained idea struck: let’s ask him to do a bespoke show in McGregor.
I asked.

He said yes.

So, Eish! It’s the 80’s was conceived.

The show will be South Africa’s soundtrack from the mid-80’s and into the 90’s, interwoven with the stories of the music and musicians, and how young South Africans danced from the total onslaught to democracy.

Do you still have the market when the wind blows, they ask.

Yes.

This is what happens: it shrinks and the diehard stall holders shelter from the northwester in the lee of the church hall.

And the equally loyal local diehard customers and a goodly bunch of visotors did not go away disappointed.

I highly recommend Expressions Photography by Andre & Selma if you need professional photographs of your accommodation. These two are not only professional but have a fabulous eye for those little details that are so important for not just the photographs, but for taking your establishment to the next level.

🔥🎸Save the date!

🎶…oh won’t you take me away to the Bay of Bombay…🎶

If this brings back memories of live gigs with the Cherry Faced Lurchers, Jennifer Fergusson, eVoid, Tananas, Bright Blue and the African Jazz Pioneers. Don’t forget Ma Brr, Mango Groove, Juluka, and many, many more that lurk in the recesses of our memories, then you’re not going to want to miss this intimate interlude of magical musical memories – and their back stories.

On the eve of South Africa’s 30th Heritage Day, join us to celebrate the music that was integral to the dark days of the mid-80s and the dawn of democracy.
