“We are excited about the expansion our South African racing options into the Western Cape with the second edition of the ISUZU IRONMAN 70.3 Mossel Bay. Mossel Bay is a city that carries rich history and a beautiful tourist destination, catering to both internationals and locals alike,” said Michele Bronkhorst, IRONMAN South Africa Operations Director.
“Mossel Bay provides ease of access for all travellers, with it only being a few minutes away from the George Airport; and only a four-hour drive from the city of Cape Town.”
Athletes participating in the ISUZU IRONMAN 70.3 Mossel Bay will take on a 1.9km (1.2-mile) swim beginning opposite the iconic Santos Beach Pavilion and exiting the water at Santos Bay at De Bakke. From here, athletes head into Transition before taking on a one-loop 90km (56-mile) bike course. Athletes will cycle out and back on George Road, then Louis Fourie Road toward Albertina, onto the N2, before reaching the turnaround at Gouritz River valley just short of Herbertsdale on the R327. From here they will return to Mossel Bay as they prepare for Transition in De Bakke.
Lastly, athletes will take on a 21.1km (13.1-mile) three and a quarter lap run course which takes them past the harbour, through the historic Central Mossel Bay, the Dias Museum Complex, while the finish line beckons at Santos Beach.
Last year’s winner, Bradley Weiss and runner’s up, Matt Trautman and Cameron Macnair are all back and will not doubt have their eyes set on a South African podium sweep again. Also racing in the men’s professional field will be fellow South Africans Keegan Cooke, Gerhard De Bruin and Timothy Hayward.
Breaking up with predominantly South African field will be Javier Gomez (two-time IRONMAN 70.3 World Champion and Olympic silver medallist), Domenico Passuello, Balaza Csoke and Tom Hug.
In the women’s professional field, reigning champion Emma Pallant-Browne (GBR) who came fourth in this year’s VinFast IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Lahti, Finland will be headlining the field. Living in South Africa, Pallant-Browne is no stranger to South Africa climates, and also comes off a strong season which saw two IRONMAN 70.3 victories in Swansea and Aix-en-Provence.
Pallant-Browne will be challenged by South African Magda Nieuwoudt and fellow Brit Laura Addie.
Much of the excitement of the race surrounds the qualifying slots that are up for grabs to the 2024 VinFast IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, in Taupō New Zealand. No doubt athletes will be giving it their all as they seek to get a once in a lifetime opportunity of racing in December next year.
IRONMAN 4 the Kidz charity trust, known as Team Orange, will have 50 athletes racing to Be A Hero. The IRONMAN 4 the Kidz Charity's aim is to raise funds annually, ensuring that the Trust can continue to make a tangible difference in the lives of children in need.
