Ama.
Woman of the sea - Vrou van die see 🐚
An ode to balance and restoration 🪑
A gathering place of loved ones, of meals shared with joy, and stories passed around the fire at sunset.
Story goes, of a 2000 year old Japanese culture where women ranging from the age of 15-85 would free-dive to forage for food on the ocean floor.
With the innate human mammalian reflex, they’ve adjusted to dive to depths 60 metres & more, holding their breath for up to 15 minutes at a time.
Originally wearing nothing but a loin cloth or their birthday suit, as anything more would give them an unfair advantage over nature.
They believe the ocean can always provide for humans, if they gather from it in their natural form. A person should take what he or she can carry, but no more.
The Ama have always been made up of women, not because they were subservient to men, but rather a philosophy that when a woman puts her hands in the ocean, balance is restored.
Ama House is just that. A homage to return, to contemplate, to regain balance & restoration. Just as the restored walls of our 130 year old home holds you with a satiated rest-easy feel.
She gives you everything you need, and nothing you don’t.
With love,
Ama
