This translucent blob was once a jellyfish. Unfortunately, jellyfish are not strong swimmers and are often washed ashore by currents and wind.

It's impossible to tell if this jellyfish was fully intact when it washed up or if it had already been partially consumed in the water. Despite being venomous, jellyfish have numerous natural predators, both in the sea and on the shore, including triggerfish, tuna, sharks, sea turtles, whales, penguins, crabs seabirds and even other jellyfish.

This particular jellyfish's venomous bits have already been devoured by plough snails or picked apart by birds.

There is some more egg laying in progress at Kanon today.

This little female is laying her egg in the sand, right where the beach meets the grass. Unfortunately, this egg will likely get washed away during the next "king" tide.

Have you ever found these peculiar shells on your beach walks?

They belong to a type of mollusc called a chiton (pronounced kai-ton). While other molluscs, like mussels and snails, have evolved to have one or two shell plates, chitons have retained a more primitive form, with eight individual shell plates along their backs. When threatened, chitons flex their shell plates and curl into a semicircle for protection, which is often the shape you find them in on the beach.

To give you an idea of how ancient chitons are, they’re related to another well-known mollusc, the octopus, which has evolved to have no shell at all. Did you know that all molluscs are related through a common ancestor?

Chitons have few predators, as their armoured bodies are nearly impossible to attack. They spend their time attached to rocks, feeding on algae, barnacles, and bacteria by scraping the rock with their radula (a tongue-like structure covered in tiny teeth).

Chitons are nocturnal, and while they don’t have eyes, they can still sense night and day by detecting changes in light through cells in their shell plates.

Did you know that we have a resident porcupine at Kanon Private Nature Reserve?

We hardly ever see him or her as porcupines are nocturnal, but we sometimes find quills on the ground and bite-sized chunks of lettuce or spinach missing from our veggie patches.

Porcupines have around 30,000 quills on their backs, which usually lie flat. When threatened, they raise their quills up, stamp their feet and charge their attacker. A large, spikey mass running at you full speed ahead can be rather terrifying, so we recommend keeping your distance if you do see one.

As you can imagine, being covered in spikes means that porcupines often stick themselves, so their quills are covered in a greasy antibiotic substance to avoid infection.
Porcupines are often preyed on by wild cats, but their predator’s success rate is extremely low as the porcupine’s prickly defence mechanism means that they are not easy to attack.

They thrive in almost any temperature, making them adaptable to almost any habitat, and they play an important role in our ecosystem, with their foraging aiding in the growth of young plants. While their digging can sometimes lead to the death of small trees, it also creates space for herbaceous plants to grow.

Although they’re incredibly cute and amusing to watch, it’s best to give them space and let them go about their business.

Did you know that oystercatchers hardly ever eat oysters?

Contrary to their name, they prefer mussels, periwinkles, worms, and crustaceans. They also don’t "catch" their food but instead forage along the sand and rocks, prying open shells they find with their flattened bills.

Oystercatchers only migrate short distances, if at all, making them permanent residents of their breeding areas. We are fortunate to have many breeding pairs at Kanon Private Nature Reserve.

As they are highly susceptible to human development, oystercatchers serve as indicators of a healthy coastline. They play a pivotal role in controlling the population of invasive Mediterranean mussels, thus helping to increase the native mussel population along our coastline.

We love seeing them all along our beach and hearing them fly to roost in the evenings. Kanon wouldn’t be the same without these beautiful birds.

In nature, the more beautiful an animal, the more dangerous it tends to be. This is certainly true for the puff adder. Also called the "moving log," its short, muscular body is covered in intricate chevron markings, with a distinguishable line between its eyes on the top of its head.

Now that we are coming out of winter, our local puff adders are becoming more active. Although they are usually active at night, we are seeing more of them on the move during the day, likely searching for water.

They are truly beautiful to look at, but they are also highly venomous. Please keep your distance if you encounter one.
